PostSubject: Jumping on people/couch   people - Jumping on people/couch EmptyMon Sep 17, 2012 1:32 am

Hello all, I just adopted a 11month old husky a few weeks ago and I noticed he likes to jump on people when they sit on the couch. Normally he isn't allowed on the couch but whenever someone decides to sit down he either jumps on them or runs around the room jumping on and off the couch.

What can I do to teach him people on the couch are off limits.. he's getting bigger and I'd hate for him to jump on an unsuspecting couch potato Sad

For the couch itself we taught Aevyn 'Off' - you can't use 'down' because it will confuse them with lay down. He picked up on Off fairly quickly, and its been a life savior.

However, as far as people go - that one isn't going to be as easy of a lesson. I think all the owners here can attest to the difficulty of teaching your husky people are not to be jumped on.

Is him jumping on people only a issue with the couch, or is it all the time?

When meeting new people he tends to jump on them but he'll settle down (I try to minimize this as much as possible), but if he's active (as in not sleeping around) he'll hop on people on the couch.... He probably considers being pushed off the couch as playing. I usually just take him out to the balcony to cool down.

I think you're right in the assumption that he thinks the pushing would be playing, maybe try stating "off" and pointing. If that doesn't work then I would try taking him down with his collar.

It helps to not "do" the desired behavior for them IE pushing them off the couch. They have to make the connection of "I jumped off the couch" not "I got pushed off the couch."

Give the command, point if you feel like it, and give them a chance to jump off themselves (this may take longer than anticipated, but should get quicker the more they do it). I like the give the command firmly, hold the point, and stare at them until they do it. The MOMENT they do praise the crap out of them. If they are being extra stubborn or behaving in a dangerous manner, like jumping on children or people that don't realize this is a training experience, then isolate the pup. You can beat this.
