FLEAS EVERYWHERE!!! Empty
PostSubject: FLEAS EVERYWHERE!!!   FLEAS EVERYWHERE!!! EmptyFri Sep 21, 2012 2:40 pm

So up where i live we have no fleas, at least that's what they tell me...
however Trillion and I often go down to where my boyfriend lives (down the mountain) about every other week and we stay for a few days. this summer there has been such an outbreak on fleas, and we have tried EVERYTHING and we have not been able to get rid of them long enough to try some essential oils.

we did flea baths which worked until a day or two later you would find baby fleas, (i guess eggs didn't wash away) i combed through her with a flea comb and diluted flee/tick shampoo (that worked best but still not 100% we tried various flea repellents. (but no flee collars) the only one we have yet to try is frontline, and it's generally because the weight which we need they're always out of (petco/petsmart/vet/feedstore) we have tried some other home remedys which have not done anything.

Somebody please suggest something! anything!
we wash her bedding every other day (and after every time we try something new)
she is chewing the insides of her legs im afraid shes going to go bald in these places, and she already managed to chew a spot on her back so the fur is noticeably shorter, and she knows she isnt supposed to be chewing/scratching but how can you blame her. Sad

I know my work just got certifect, i haven't heard any good/bad reviews on it im going to look that up right now probably go with that, i think the problem is that her fur is too thick. i feel like it dosnt work well enough through her fur.

We went through this with the chihuahua and it was hell. Luckily now we can pretty much take care of fleas the minute we see them.

First, wash everything Trillion comes into contact with. Fabric toys, bedding (yours and hers), furniture. Even if she's not allowed on the couches or beds, it never hurts to be safe. We went to petsmart and got a spray that was supposed to kill and repel fleas and we believed it worked. The important thing is trying to wash everything at the same time or there will just be a cycle of re-infestation. While everything is in the washer, comb through Trillion and have a bowl of hot water and dish soap. Drown the fleas in that solution. You're going to want to be very thorough and get the eggs too, that's why they keep coming back. The eggs survive and hatch. After you come through her, get her in that flea bath. We might have overdid it with pooka but he was getting two flea baths a day until we took care of the problem.

If you can, try to keep her off anything fabric until you get it under control. Unfortunately, this probably means a lotttt of crate time. And if you do get that spray I mentioned, spray anything she can get in contact with. When she is out of the crate, spray it and let it air dry. When she's in the crate, spray everything else. We may have been completely paranoid and went way overboard but we did end up with no fleas in under a week.

Don't worry so much about the hair loss. I promise it'll grow back. Callie's got bald spots all over her from biting because of her demodex and I'm already seeing the hair grow back.

Get a Capstar pill and give it to her, and then clean everything. Wash all blankets and bedding, and vacuum the house like crazy. You can use another topical like Frontline in conjunction with the Capstar and essential oils, and that will at least get all the fleas off her quickly and then repel them. You'll have to keep at it with the combing though to get all the eggs out. While you're treating her for the fleas, get some food grade diatomaceous earth and sprinkle it in your yard and into the carpet. I've also heard (but not verified, so someone back me up on this if you know more) that sprinkling salt into the carpet helps too.

Good luck!

I can't help with this I have never had a flea problem with any dog. I have always used frontline plus and never saw even one flea. Good luck.

Ditto on this.

Don't neglect to vacuum the furniture, all nooks and crannies in the house and wash all bedding in the house, not just the stuff that the dogs lay on. Fleas have a wonderful ability to jump very far and they will literally deposit eggs and flea dirt (teeny dried blood pellets to feed the baby fleas when they hatch) all over the house. I highly recommend the food grade diatomaceous earth (DE). Sprinkle it in your carpet, furniture, dog beds, etc and let it sit for a few days before vacuuming it up. Also sprinkle the DE into the dogs coat and then rub it in.

Also remember that when you vacuum up the house to seal the bag and throw it away to prevent the fleas from escaping the bag and re-infesting the house. If you have a bagless vacuum or do not intend to seal up the bag and dispose of it after each time you vacuum to remove the fleas, then put a flea collar in the bag or canister to at least kill any survivors left in the vacuum.

Or from a local health food store. Make sure that is FOOD GRADE. Do not use filter grade. It's a godsend.

I hope you found something. I think Walmart now carries Frontline and it's generic as well. Although I don't know what Frontline does when applied to dogs who already have fleas. Years ago Frontline made a spray for such purposes, but I'm not sure it is even marketed anymore.

Good Luck!

I don't know what I would do if I had fleas in my house. Sorry, I'm no help on this either other than what every one else has mentioned. I can't put frontline or any flea repellant on Rebel as he's highly allergic to it, so I have to use the natural oils. Thankfully he doesn't have fleas, but just in case...
