Well, I'm hoping to be a husky owner very soon; if all goes well. I did find a breeder who seems to very reputable. She is retiring two of her show dogs and I'm just asking out of curiosity what you all would reccommend for a first time husky owner.

One is 8 years old and one is 4.5 years old; both are female.

If she does allow me to take one home I don't know if she will allow me to choose which one, but if she does which age would you reccommend if our family gets along with both? Obviousely I will ask her also if she gives me the option to choose, but I'm just curious what others think.

Thank you all in advance.

Personally, for my family we would go with the younger one. Once you meet both of them though, you'll figure out which one has the better personality that would work for you. The right dog will pick you and you'll just know Smile

I agree with Jannet, it's all good adn well choosing one now, but you wont really know which one suits you best until you see them nad get to know their personalities first hand. I suggest not setting your mind on one or the other until you're there.

How about both of them. Then they would have each other for company..

Love this idea. THey wouldnt be under so much stress ghoing from one home to another, because they'd have eachother. They wouldnt ever be lonely.

Age won't really matter in choosing the one that's right for your family. An 8 year old will most likely be just as energetic as a 4 year old. Of course the older dog will obviously not be with you as long assuming both dogs live to old age. I like older dogs as they tend to be a lot calmer, plus most people want young dogs so I hate to see the older ones passed by...that's just me. Regardless, I wouldn't make your choice based on age, I would go and see what dog fits best with your family in person and let that be that. Nothing wrong with taking both dogs either but I know not everyone can handle adding two dogs at a time. Even I ended up rescuing 2 retired breeding dogs that came from the same backyard breeding operation but I didn't take them both at the same time. I adopted the second one (the daughter) a year after adopting the first (the mother), which worked out a million times better than taking them both on at the same time. I only say this so you don't feel pressured into taking off more than you can handle if you only want one at the moment. Wink

well we got our girl at 6 (retired from breeding) and let me tell you, you would have never known, hell at 9.5 people are still shocked when i tell them how old she is, she is full of energy when she wants to be. i agree age should not be the deciding factor, see what one picks you and your family. and if you can take both do it, you know your gonna end up with another at some point anyways Razz thanks for adopting Smile

I thought about that, but we do currently have 2, 5 month old lab/shepherds. So just one for now, unless I can convince my fiancee otherwise..lol

oh you have you 5 months olds..... that might be an issue with an older dog if in fact she does not want to be active with them. i would take the pups with you as well to see how both huskies do with them!

We definately plan on bringing the puppies, i also have a 4 year old daughter that will come as well. Those are requirements on our part. And i did mention that to the breeder in my email. A new member needs to get along with all of us. I really hope things do work out though, she said both get along with children of all ages and other dogs; so I have my fingers crossed.

Thank you for thinking of that though, I need and appreciate all the advice anyone can give.
