2 huskies indoors, is it possible? Empty
PostSubject: 2 huskies indoors, is it possible?   2 huskies indoors, is it possible? EmptyFri Feb 19, 2010 10:22 am

I've had mixed reviews about this. We have a small female husky now, she lives in our apt.
She gets plenty of exercise, we walk her, take her to the dog park, I roller blade with her, and bike and hike on occasion. This keeps her well behaved indoors, and she is very well trained indoors now. We want her to have a husky companion, preferably a male husky with energy like hers so they can play together. Do you think it's do-able to own 2 huskies indoors as long as I keep up with how we raised our first one? I work at home so I will be with them the majority of the time, almost all the time during the week, and during that time I feel confident about how things will work. It's only the rare amount of time I leave and have to leave them alone indoors that I worry about. With proper exercise and training, is this possible to have them just play together and not chew the place up? We've never had a chew problem with our current dog. Only a little in the past when I worked away from home and left her alone all the time. Now that I'm home all the time, when we leave her, she is fine and does nothing.

Do you think they'd just play together, keeping each other occupied? One lady with 3 huskies indoors said she did it and all they do is play together while she's gone. They don't mess with stuff since they are trained and have each other....huskies are notorious for escaping and/or chewing things if they are alone and bored, but does that mean it's good to own 2?

Other people (who don't own huskies) call me crazy, and start judging me left and right. I find that odd, since they don't have husky experience first hand. Either way, if you own 2 huskies and they are left alone indoors, do you have advice for me?

I only have one husky and i dont leave her alone outside of her crate! You know how they are seeing as you have one already but others on here have several and will be able to give you better advice :-) but good luck with that!

Talk to any husky owner and they will tell you that two are better than one for all the reasons that you just said: they often take out their energy on each other instead of the house Smile

However, on the other side of the coin, I can't (in fact no one can) give you a guarantee. I think you have all the potential in the world to have two well behaved huskies if you keep up with the current schedule that you have (great job btw!) but the fact of the matter is EVERY dog is different. Some get into things more than others, that's just a fact. It would take work and training as it seems you are prepared to do, but I just don't want you going into this thinking that this will be a sure thing. Nothing is a sure thing.

But yet again, given all those odds, I would still advise you to get another if you have the time, money and capabilities of doing so! I have two indoor huskies. Most of the people on this board who have more than one have indoor huskies. So don't listen to the non-husky owners on this one. In general they don't know what they're talking about Smile Refer to my signature: "It's a husky thing...you wouldn't understand!" Very Happy

I've left all five of my dogs indoors for up to five hours several times. It's not something I care to do regularly. We don't allow any play between the dogs when inside, so they spend the time sleeping. My thinking is our steady everyday routine (six plus miles of running) helps keeps the destructive habits at bay. But I only have one Husky, the Malamutes are much calmer in my opinion. Eh, once they're full grown. I wouldn't do it if the dogs were under three years old honestly.

I have 2 huskies indoors and they are never left unsupervised in my house. That's just the way it's always been for me. They have a very structured life unfortunately until mine calms down. Since my hubby has been gone they don't have someone to stay home with them all day. Some days I have icon walk me to work, some days ecko does, but when the boarding kennels are full they have to stay home all day until I get off work:( so they really play hard when I get home and take them to the park:) when my husband was home him and icon would walk to my work and meet me for lunch:) it was very sweet:) so they are feeling just as lonely as I am and it kills me but it is necessary until my hubby comes home:( I believe that as long as you keep them both well exercised you shouldn't have any problems, but just because your female doesn't chew doesn't mean your male won't... They can direct their energy on eachother or they can get twice the damage done:) but I personally think they would play more than wreck the place. I say good luck and you don't know til you try:)

we have 2 indoors, of course their only 4 months old. Yes they will keep each other occupied but their hyper (see my video). You need to have plenty of toys for them to keep them occupied, I recommend KONG brand, yes their more expensive but if you have one like mine anything cheaper they will tear through pretty quick.
We have trained them since they were 7 weeks though so they are pretty good, Kiera (our black one) is now the "unofficial" mascot for our local High School and an unoffical member of the cheerleading squad. Helps that our son is the mascot (in a husky suit) mascot. She went to a basketbal game the other night and was a charmer. We learned we can't take them both because they will compete with each other and that leads to some hyper behavior. She also tried out for Toto for the school play ( i kow shes not a cairn terrier but she is more disiplined than any other dog they had try out) its in 3 weeks so she wont grow too much if she gets the role, there was a snippy little terrier that tried out and its only like a 5 lb dog.
They do keep each other company at night, and we have them on the landing that leads outside, thats their safe place.
I guess my biggest warning would be , if your husky has any destructive tendancies now ( ie digging, tearing up crap, eating socks) plan on it being doubled. The girls we have love to help each other destroy what they can ( I ahve 2 holes i have to fill in in the spring in my back yard)

Ok so I guess I will be the downer on this on! we have 2 huskies all most 7yr and around 2yr, YES they play with each other and have a great time together but when we are at work they are crated! I have left them alone for no more than 2hrs at a time and have not come home to NOT having anything destroyed, nothing big so far but news papers their toy bin destroyed toys pens TV remote, just a few things and this is AFTER a good 30 min brisk walk. my husband has been working nights lately so this week I leave around 8:30am and he sleeps till 12:30-1 and I have been leaving them out in that time, I'm not sure if it is cause they know he is still home or they are just being good but so far they have only torn up a toy, so their loss. I say get your girl a friend and going with a boy is a good idea, we have a male and female. and if you keep up on the training it might work it might not in any case it might just be solved by keeping them in 1 room when you have to leave or getting crates. I would not let the fact that you might not get so lucky the 2nd time keep you from getting another if you are up for the extra cost and care of them go for it and just know we are all here to help you through any issues you might have. are you thinking about adopting? you also don't say the age of the girl you have now will you look for one around the same age or younger?

I agree with Jen. My 3 cannot be left out alone for more than 10 minutes without getting into something. Having multiples is amazing I would never again have only 1 dog.

We have 3 that are inside dogs..I think our life has calmed down since we adopted Mika (our last adoption). Sure, when they do play, they can get crazy, but for us, the hyperness is less often....which for us is an even trade-off. We keep them locked in the kitchen when gone, with 1/2 doors between the hallway and bedroom and between the hallway & dining room. So far, no big problems. We keep the trash on the attic steps, locked behind the attic door. They have chewed up a rug (which I didn't bother to replace), and I will be sure to keep the dishrag away from the edge of the sink from now on, after reading about Sniper..but other than that, really no big issues. Before we are walking out the door, they are curled up, ready to nap. Can't say for sure what goes on when we're gone, but no total destruction. (there WAS the time we left the bedroom door open, and Nanuk & isis did shred the paperback book, tho. They seemed to have had a gay old time!) When we are home, they are outside in the backyard, romping around. It's a long backyard, so they are able to run & run! I say go for it. We weren't looking for the third, but she just brought more fun. Don't know if I would necessarily recommend 3, it's not for everyone, but I think 2 is DEFINITELY do-able!
