Bottom of Feet (Pads) Damaged from Running Empty
PostSubject: Bottom of Feet (Pads) Damaged from Running   Bottom of Feet (Pads) Damaged from Running EmptyWed Nov 14, 2012 4:10 am

Hi. My 3 y/o Siberian Husky Bane and I have been pretty active in "bikejoring" as of late. I put that in quotes because he pulls for a little, but then likes to run next to me. I haven't fully trained him yet. Anyways, the trail we went on today is a paved bike trail, and even though I tried to get him to run along the sides of it in the dirt, he seemed to like running right down the middle. So when we got home I noticed him licking his paws and sure enough the pads of his feet are damaged. Nothing deep at all just a little raw. He can walk fine, but I'm sure there is some pain or he wouldn't be tending to them. I won't take him out running again until they are fully healed. I will get him some boots before taking him on a paved path again. I do have some concerns though.

Should I avoid walking him the next few days to give the wounds time to heal and avoid infection?
Should I apply any sort of anti-biotic?
Anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks guys.

Buy Musher's Secret Paw Wax. It is like lotion for the dogs paws if you don't put doggy shoes on them. I prefer the mushers paw wax over the shoes because I know Daisy will just chew those things off. Also, it is best to walk/run dogs in gravel or grass because the pavement can hurt them after a while. The dog can lick this and be fine. With human lotion, not so much because of the things in it that might not settle too well for a dog if he/she licks it.

Anyways you can go to this website http://musherssecret.net/
OR just buy it off Ebay or something like I did. I paid about 15 bucks for 60 grams.

Also, humans can use this for VERY rough skins like their knees, feet or elbows.

Hope this helped! Very Happy

Tender foot is a good product, or mushers secret. If you don't have either of those, try coconut oil, olive oil or vitamin E oil. Wash it thoroughly and rub in the oil. Keep the area clean.

I wouldn't use an antibiotic, just keep an eye on it. However, do avoid walking on it. Poor little one needs a break!

I'd watch for inflammation, and you could always use a sensitive skin moisturizer to aid in the rawness....I'd limit the walking on paved areas, and just keep a good eye on the progress.

Thanks for your help. I think I'll just keep an eye on it for now, as it doesn't seem to be bothering him. There doesn't seem to be any inflammation either.

do the wax, get dog booties from www.dogbooties.com and you can also do an Epson salt bath for the pads to help in healing them. i would keep him from running with you till they get healed up.

Ditto what others have said about Mushers' Secret and booties.

Eventually after enough exposure to running on pavement, their paws toughen up so they can run on it.
Just be careful on hot days and watch for broken glass.
