Purple tongue? Empty
PostSubject: Purple tongue?   Purple tongue? EmptyThu Dec 27, 2012 3:37 am

Today I was hiking with Tesla up at around 11000 feet with temperatures around 3 degrees F. On our way back to the car, I noticed Tesla's tongue was a deep shade of purple rather than the usual pinkish red. Other than the purple tongue, though, there was nothing wrong with him. He was bounding around the trail and in the snow like a typical husky would, and was disappointed as ever when we made it back to the car. Any reason why his tongue might have turned purple?

Their tongue being purple can be caused by a lack of oxygen.

The cold temps restricted the blood flow to the tongue, I wouldn't worry about it to much unless it stayed discolored after warming up at home.

I was thinking lack of oxygen at first, but like I said his energy level was totally unaffected and he was bounding through the snow with the same abandon as always. The cold makes a lot of sense, particularly since we were taking it slow on the way down (950 feet in 1.3 miles).

FWIW, his tongue was back to normal after 20 minutes in the car.
