| We have a 2 year old Shih Tzu and a 9 week old husky. The husky is constantly chewing on the shih tzu tail and is just terrorizing the poor thing! We are trying to keep then separated but Oakley is so determined! I am switching methods to crating him when he is doing inappropriate behavior.
any suggestions? |

| I'm sure its not aggression, he most likely just doesnt have very good manners yet. Was he taken home early at 6 weeks? Puppies taken away from their litter too early have issues with bite inhibition because they didnt learn the proper socialization they needed from their siblings. |

| He was taken at 7 weeks and it is probably just bad manners but I'm having trouble teaching him that's is not alright to chew on another dogs tail. |

| What does the shih tzu have to say about it? Usually an older dog will let a pup know when he's overstepped his boundaries. |

| He is usually the dominant dog but he has given it up. Lately he is not eating as much and his tail is dragging the ground. He is also hiding under our table. |

| All I can offer is I know I've heard that using a crate for punishment isn't the best idea. The crate should be a positive experience for the pup. It might be best to find another location for timeouts like a bathroom or something.
Good luck |

| I'm sure your other dog is growing tired of the puppies behavior and is trying to avoid him.
While crating should be a "positive" place for the purpses of crate training... I wouldn't trust a young Husky puppy alone in a bathroom with access to things like toilet paper, floor mats, or anything else they can destroy and occupy themselves with. I would use the crate over an open room. When we had the apartment we used a squared off part of the hall and baby-gated it so that became the timeout. There was nothing other than flooring and walls so it was boring as well as secluded from the rest of the apartment. That worked for us.
Regardless which place you choose, being adamant on time outs everytime he pesters the other dog (it's especially beneficial if you can do it immediately after the other dog has expressed he is not interested such as with a glare or lip curl or moving away... that way you're reinforcing what the other dog is trying to communicate.) _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! | I use my kitchen for time outs. I would put Lucian in there when he was bugging either one of my cats. He got the hint rather quick. He prefers to be in the room with people, so he really doesn't like being secluded from everyone, and knows that's what happens when he's bad, lol. |
