PostSubject: Biting clothes..   Biting clothes.. EmptyWed Oct 31, 2012 11:27 am

So my guy has been frustrating me immensely. He keeps biting socks (on feet) and pant legs. He's full on grasping and trying to tear. I know he thinks its playing, but how can I make this stop? He has plenty of stuff to chew on. Squeak toys, bully stick, antler, old shoe, old socks. I don't get why he keeps biting clothes on people. It hurts when his teeth hit skin. I tried using the NO CHEW spray, it's been working on the couch and stuff like that, but it's not working on clothes. Help please. I keep yelling no, I yelp like a dog, I put his other toys in his mouth, nothing really seems to make an impact.

Anna went through that stage. We just told her no and she listened after a while, you just have to be more stubborn than he is. You can always try putting him in time out when he does it. If Anna really isn't listening that's what we do with her. I don't let Anna bite at all that probably helped make her stop biting socks on our feet. We corrected the biting from the beginning because I am not a chew toy. Hahaha. He is still young so it is going to take time.

What's a good area of the house to use for time out? It seems like all our rooms he associates with something. My room is crate, living room is play, he poops in the sunroom, bedroom downstairs means outside. kitchen is attached to living room pretty much

We use the bathtub as well. We didnt want to use the crate as time out because we didnt want them to assciate it with anything negative since they get put in while we are at work.

A firm NO and make eye contact, then ignore or time out

Good luck

I use the corner by the front door. We usually make her sit there for a minute or so and we usually have to sit with her or she thinks it is play time and run under the futon. I sit far enough back that she can't reach me but close enough to catch her if she runs which she likes to do. Just find a spot that is away from his toys and things he can play with and make sure to tell him no even when putting him in the corner. I agree with Kelly make eye contact, show him you are serious. Ignoring him might work too.

We also do not use the crate as punishment. Crate training was hard enough without back peddling. And our bathtub is too much of a happy place for Anna. She loves the bathtub besides actual bath time. She likes to lick all the water out or lay in it.

Kale did this for a couple days before it was nipped. What I did was remove his mouth from my clothes using my index finger and thumb under his jaw, kept hold of his lower jaw while giving him the "death stare" and said "no" in a low, firm voice. Then I promptly left the room to a place he could not follow. I usually took all his toys with me on my way out so he could not entertain himself. 5-10 mins alone was sufficient.

Kale never responded to yelping, nor the sprays, and could care less if I just said no. I used a lot more "physical correction" on him when he was a youngster (mostly involving me making him have eye contact with me). I rarely do now. I just give him "the look" and he stops his naughtiness...sometimes Laughing I realized that stopping the behavior, making him focus on me so he could actually comprehend what I was asking him, and a "punishment" (me leaving the room) was a great combo for us.

I know this is an old thread but better to add then start a new one right? How exactly do you hold his jaw? I have the same problem with Vegeta and would like to try this idea; I'm just not sure how you mean when you hold his jaw. Are you holding it shut or just holding the actual bottom jaw like when someone grabs a kid's chin to turn his head side to side while inspecting him (if that made any sense lol)?

Mishka's been doing this a lot. Mostly when I take him outside to play. So I'm not entirely sure how to correct this since there's really no place to put him in "time out". I've tried the bottom jaw grab and telling him no directly in his eyes and that hasn't helped any.

Link knows the "easy" command and he will relinquish at least in intensity. If it goes too far I can usually get him to stop with eye contact, a firm "no", and "leave it."

But sometimes it just seems too irresistible for him, almost as though he's thinking "I know I shouldn't do this but...........(teeth make contact)."

He basically gets it, although about 15 minutes ago I put my hoodie over my head and crawled around with him which made him very happy and he could not resist biting the top of my head with the hoodie on. That was a new one for him Smile

Oh puppies.

Almost every puppy I've ever had went through this phase to some extent. That and untying shoelaces. Luci especially loves my fuzzy socks and pajama pants. She thinks the stare down/"no" is funny. Same with the yelp. Time outs aren't so funny to her, but to her the consequence is worth the fun. Actually, I notice that she gets really bad when she gets overstimulated and *needs* some time to herself. Nanook just thinks she's crazy. lol
