Ok, so I thought I would share our experience with Mishka's spay just for the hell of it. Also because I'm sure a lot of members have female puppies and are planning on spaying them sooner or later. I will be posting pictures and making observations to go along with them. This is mainly for those people who are curious as to what to expect when they get their sibes back from the vet Very Happy

Pictures and such will be in my next post! Mishka and I's Spay Experience 1347041234

I'll be following this. I've already researched quite a bit and pretty much know what to expect, but it will be interesting to follow this and see if Yuki is similar when she gets spayed in 11 days.

PostSubject: Re: Mishka and I's Spay Experience   Mishka and I's Spay Experience EmptyThu Mar 07, 2013 5:34 pm

We dropped Mishka off at the vet on the morning of March 5 at the age of 5 Months, 1 week, and 3 days (thanks PitaPata). It was required that she stay overnight, which I thought was great. We picked her back up March 6 at around 3:00 PM. As soon as she saw me and my family she was jumping up and down on us and whining and talking to us, while we were all cringing because of her stitches!
When we got home she ran straight towards the water bowl and was lapping from it nonstop until she emptied the whole thing. We later read from a paper we got that she wasn't supposed to drink for the next 4 hours as the excitement could upset her tummy. Oops. Good thing she was never affected by it. She was then running around the whole house until we tried to calm her down as she can't be doing strenuous activity such as running and/or jumping. She acted like nothing happened, and still does.

Went to a PetCo to get her Elizabethan Collar, mainly for when we aren't there to watch her while she's in her cage. Surprisingly though, she got used to it fairly quickly
Mishka and I's Spay Experience Drinki10
We were given 50MG of Tramadol for her pain. Supposed to give her 25MG (pills were cut in half) every 12 hours. We did that and her eyes dilated, and was acting extremely goofy, it was so funny. We decreased the dose to 14.5MG. But here she is, sleeping with her head up after the Tramadol kicked in.Mishka and I's Spay Experience Sleepi10
Her front leg was shaved to put the IV in.

3 Little Skin Sutures, I think that's what they are since I've watched the actual surgery plenty of times, lol

Her sleeping all funny! And look at those COW SPOTS! I would have never seen them if she hadn't been shaved down there!

Mishka and I's Spay Experience Img_2013

OOPS SHE WOKE UP

Mishka and I's Spay Experience Img_2014

So far, her behavior has not changed drastically by any means. She still messes around, like grabbing socks off the couch and running away with it, and jumping on couches. That, and her sleeping a little more than usual, which isn't always a bad thing Wink

I will try to answer any questions if anyone has any, and will be updating with more pics when her stitches get taken out, or if anything unexpected happens.. Very Happy

The amount of water Mishka took down so fast would have me questioning how much she had access to at the vet.

For folks in general, I would have asked more strongly about taking the dog home same day. Most places want to keep them overnight and kind of insist on it. But I think they fair better at home in a comfortable, familiar environment so I always insist on taking all my pets home after spays/neuters and other minor surgeries as long as there are no complications. Yeah the vets talk up a storm on how they want to keep them overnight for observation but I can be just as persistent in insisting they come home same day. I have never lost that argument with any vet and always brought mine home same day. It's a stressful enough experience already without being kept overnight. And fwiw I've never encountered a problem with bringing my animals home the same day.

Good point Val I also wonder if most Vets have someone at the office all night?? I guess I would be asking before I agree to leave my dog there.

Mine is a same-day surgery, so Yuki will be staying at the vets for about 10 hours. Should I also be restricting her water right when she gets home?

I have never restricted water or been told to restrict water after a spay or neuter.

PostSubject: Re: Mishka and I's Spay Experience   Mishka and I's Spay Experience EmptyFri Mar 08, 2013 12:09 pm

When Bourbon was done he went in at 730 am and they called for him to be picked up a 2pm. I was able to pick him up a 3 and they said not to let him gorge on water and keep him laying down no play. And sent me with pain killers. He was not phase by surgery and they wanted him to rest totally the first day. I had to get sedative a mild one casue he was on constant zoomies after surgery cause he was not allowed to play with the other dogs. The water gorging was also on the comment that he was only allowed outside to pee and we were suppoe to bring him right in afterward. He did have to wait to eat until 6pm that night to make sure all anesthetia was out of his system. He had an e-collar and he wanted to zoomie with it on. (even with the sedative just not as awildly.) Question He did not think anything was wrong so no reason to stop or relax. When we had Baylin done she was more relaxed and sat around with her head down alot. But she never want us to carry her up th estairs she want to bound up them hereself. (nono) She had no sedatives and stayed calm and no issues except she disliked the collar. Bourbon beat the collar on the crate bent it beat it on the walls and table legs all on purpose. It was one we previously purchased but he broke it.

Summary:
every dog acts differently so I recommend that if it is not expensive take a day of sedative just in case maybe just use it a sleep time

well my dad came over to visit today, and while he was sitting on my couch, mishka mounted his legs and started humping -__- I've had a lab do this but she wasn't spayed, so I figured. but mishka has no ovaries or uterus! I heard this was a dominance thing, about to do some research on why this is lol

I have an adult girl that does not hump the leg but tries to plant herself on your foot like it is a heat thing (she is fixed) the vet said it is still an insinct thing and possibly "itchy". She only does it once in a blue moon.

I actually posted a thread about this a few months ago! I was very curious.

It can be a dominance thing, but it can also be because they're excited or stressed.

If you don’t mind me asking for those already in the know, how much does spaying your dog usually cost?

When I went to Banfield to sign up for their puppy plan they asked if I wanted to “Plus Plan” which included spayed for hundred bucks more, which I initially opted not to do.

The reason why I opted out has nothing to do with me wanting to breed her but more in the line that no outside dog can come in to my house – backyard where she usually plays -, and when out and about Meeka would always be close to me, so in that moment I opted to what I thought was saving a hundred bucks. As of late though, I have regretted the move and want to get her spayed in the near future as you never know what might happen.

The only problem I may have is that Meeka absolutely hates being inside the house. She maybe stays 5-10 feet from the door, and that’s about it she rather always be outside (I always tend keep a eye on her). I literally have to carry her if I want her in the middle of the house or something but she goes right back close to the door. I believe she is traumatized as the breeder I got her from kept her as a outside dog as a newborn which seems wrong. I can understand if she would be a bit older, but not a newborn.

Mine's going to be around $200 but I chose to go with a specific spay center, meaning they only do spays/neuters, so that I know they're experienced and know what they're doing. I'm not sure how good my personal vet is at spays so I didn't want to chance it.

Alex, have you tried doing a search yet? I know we already have an existing thread dedicated to discussing and comparing how much spays have cost people at various places like low cost clinics, regular vets, Ban field, etc and different locations around the country.

It's super easy, you just either have someone lay them down and restrain while one person takes them out, or even one person could hold them standing while one takes the stiches out Smile

im crossing my fingers they take her in the back for this because im squeemish. Good to hear that it's fast and easy though. For some reason i had pictured it to be more difficult.

Here's the saddest picture I took of when she first tried on the cone. **we did take the sticker off** but we wanted to be sure it fit before we removed it Smile
