My Husky and My Cats Empty
PostSubject: My Husky and My Cats   My Husky and My Cats EmptySat Mar 30, 2013 10:26 pm

Let me start by saying that I am aware the huskies have a large prey drive. And my husky and my cats are only out and about together when I am home. Additionally, the cats have safe places to go to to avoid my little Adelaide. Laughing

With that being said, here is my question. I adopted my husky, Adelaide, about 2 weeks ago. She has been in a home with a cat for the last 6 months. I was told that she was not aggressive with the cat but completely fascinated by it. All that is true. So far, it's been pretty good. The only thing I'm working on is that I would like her to get to a place that she will ignore the cats every now and then. Right now, if they move at any time, she has to be right there. I didn't know if there is some aversion training that I can do? When she is finally getting on my last nerve messing with the cats, we take a time out and work on some other training, like Lay Down. Of course, I have to say the cats are driving me nuts too. Because everyone will finally chill out and relax and then one of the cats decides that's the best time to stroll through the living room

Thanks for listening.

Good luck! I hope someone can help you.

I know our Paw Paw has super high prey drive. He's caught birds out of the sky. He's insanely intense. He's already tried to kill 2 of our 4 cats. We keep the dogs downstairs and the cats upstairs, separated by a baby gate system. That seems to do the job. But if the cats try to sneak downstairs, they're just asking to become a "Paw Paw snack!"

Sounds like the prey drive in your pup is not as bad, so that could be a good thing in the long run.

I thought I would give everone an update.

Adelaide has been in the family since March 19th, a little over 3 weeks. She has settled in great. My only irritation has been her persistent bothering and chasing of the two cats in the family. Slowly, day after day, it is getting better. I dream of the day when I find a cat curled up next to Adelaide. Some of you may think that is a naive goal Wink. However,..... drum roll please..... last night, this crazy dog My Husky and My Cats F325f29f-c472-441c-8c90-7a5c151ed4af_zpse765b8b0 and this silly cat My Husky and My Cats 6835b509-0622-4b02-bc87-41181f1a5928_zps239d1479
laid down on the bed one foot away from each other.

Mathilde actually jumped up on the bed and laid down in the vicinity of Adelaide. Adelaide got up and even sniffed her with no excitement or aggression and Mathilde didn't hiss back. So Adelaide laid down too. For a while, Adelaide had laid her head down on her paw and Mathilde's tail kept swishing over Addy's nose! I watched them for a while making sure havic did not ensue. They stayed like that for a very long time! Very Happy But don't worry, Adelaide was back to chasing them this morning.

When my husband and I first moved in together we got a cat. The cat is now 6 yrs. old. She has already done with the kitten phase and all she does anymore is lay down and relax. She does not really run anywhere unless my little Meeka is chasing her. When we got the cat she was never socialized at all other than with some family members. Now years later she is very anti social. She does not like any type of other animal around her and will kill things like birds, mice, and even bunnies.

Bringing in my husbands dog that is a mix of blue heeler and great Pyrenees we knew that it would take some time (maybe even years) to get them to get along. Then we got my Siberian husky. In a way the cat has gotten use to my husbands dog. They can even be in the same room together. So half of the battle is done by almost forcing them to get along. But my little Meeka will go after the cat all of the time. And is just as fast as the cat.

I know that one day that they will get along. That may be years from now. But not to long ago we came home to find that Meeka broke out of her crate and was roaming the house with the cat. Both animals were fine. We did not see any markings on any animal. The house was still up, nothing was tore up, no trash messes, no cat litter everywhere, and she only pee peed on the floor one time. I have started to think that maybe they read off our energy and since we were not there they did what comes natural and get along. But that does not mean that I am going to let this happen all the time. I have to see all of this with my eyes for weeks before I ever play with the idea of allowing that to happen again.

I know someone who has a husky and a cat who sleeps with the husky and looks at him as his buddy. This particular cat has an easy going temperament, but it is definitely possible for a husky and a cat to be good friends! Smile

PostSubject: Re: My Husky and My Cats   My Husky and My Cats EmptyThu May 02, 2013 7:30 pm

Hi there, this is my first post.

I have a husky that is about 3 years old, I've had him for 2.5 of those years. He's an incredibly good dog, aside from the wanderlust and a prey drive that is on overdrive. He catches birds out of the air, too, and catches anything from toads (he spits them out instantly) to raccoons, to the cats. He got one of our cats, Willow, in his mouth once, but we managed to save her and she suffered no injuries.

Our other dog, August (border collie, gold lab, rottweiler mix), who is just a few months younger than Leo (the husky), gets along with the cats. At first he was unsure of them, then frightened, and now he just ignores them. I hope Leo can someday get to that point, but I have my doubts.

Hi Karmaann,

How is Adelaide getting on with your cat now?

I have a 11 week old husky, 3 cavaliers and a cat, my house is a mad house!!! Shadow the husky is very interested in Hugo our cat, but we are lucky that we have an easy going cat that considers himself a dog and will stand up for himself, but I think he can only take so much. I hope the fascination wears off..... I too would love to see them get on like he does with our cavaliers.
