Wow, that is amazing. Kudos to you!

I can't begin to imagine the change in overall health and energy levels as a result of losing 50% of your body weight.

Do you have any before and after pics for comparison?

Shocked How did storm get so big, that's like a person being morbidly obese, you did an amazing job getting the weight of storm, some people do not realize over feeding is just as harmful as underfeeding.

The story I got was that the original owners ended up putting him in a kennel too small for him and left him with a bag of food, with no exercise, basically neglecting him. I'm surprised that he is a very good husky when we got him after being neglected for I don't know how long, but for a husky to put on that much weight, I would think it was for quite some time.

I have full vet records, and he was already at least 100 lbs by the time he was 2 years old (or was it a year old). That would mean he was at least 30 lbs overweight at that time. He went into rescue at 140 lbs, lost about 25 lbs in foster care, and then came to us at about 115 lbs and hypothyroid. It took just about 9 months to get him down to 73 lbs. and completely off thyroid meds. Over this past summer, he dropped another 5 lbs somehow, which is still ok, but our vet would like to see him no less than 70 lbs.

Oh so the thyroid was directly related to his poor diet, he is lucky he did not end up diabetic or with liver damage, people really don't realize how harmful it is, I feel so bad every time i see a overweight dog or cat and the owners think it is "Cute". If you would not want to be that big don't allow your animal to be. He is BEAUTIFUL though.

He currently is borderline so we have to watch his weight. I don't think because he was hypothyroid, he was overweight because his thyroid check is within normal range now, but more on the high side so his weight has to be in check. I am assuming because his previous owner let him to become morbidly obese, his thyroid level shot up. So more like him being overweight contributed to his thyroid, not because of his thyroid he was overweight. Neglect caused him to become overweight.

Thank you! It was a long journey for Storm, and we still monitor his weight and food intake very carefully, but he is much happier and healthier and we hope to have him around for a long time!

Ditto on this. My mother in law is one of those people who thinks fat is cute and that feeding more than a dog needs is a sign of love. Weigh in... - Page 20 1625187496 Her vet and myself have been advising her to stop over feeding for years. And she comments on how skinny and starving my dogs are who are all actually at perfect weights. All 4 of her dogs are huge rolly pollies with health problems caused directly by their obesity including diabetes, heart, lung, and liver failure. And then she complains to high heaven about their poor health and mounting vet bills which she struggles to afford...all of which could have been so easily prevented. No If hers or Storm's plight can help prevent others from over feeding then this post will have been worth something.

Claudia that's what I meant, they let him get so big his thyroid got thrown out of whack. My husbands grandparents had a cat that they let get huge(Like 30 pound cat and stayed that way for 14 years) an in turn he developed diabetes which was untreated/checked which lead to liver damage and eventually death(Cat lived to be 16 though)

Bodhi weighed 47.5 lbs. today at the vet's office, getting his shots.
The vet said he's at a perfect weight, not too skinny and she could still feel his ribs.
He's gained five lbs. since last spring.
So I am going to start decreasing his food a little.

The vet said most of the huskies she sees are overweight.

Koda (4 years, 7 months) weighed in at 52.3lbs at the vet on Friday. He's gained 3.6lbs the past 3 months, which I'm happy about. He wasn't really skinny, but he looks better at this weight. His waist is not so small compared to his chest, haha.
Rogue (18 months) weighed in at 29.6lbs. She's got the perfect little figure.
