You could try to train him to the same area by giving him something in the area to pee on that he's more comfortable with. An old towel or rag in the right area that he's willing to pee on, then over time remove the rag. Hopefully he'll associate the act to the area.

Speaking of funny places to do your business. My husky likes to do #2 right in the middle of the road. He's got grass on either side of the sidewalk for the entire walk, but he'll often do his business right in the middle of the road as we cross the street. Much more exciting to clean up after your dog while also playing frogger.

I hesitate to call it "aggression", but Kairo treats cats like play things (tried to grab Anya out of my arms - not hard enough to hurt her, but with the motion like she was about to play tug). She is also a huge cat chaser and just this morning about took my arms of after one I didn't see in a bush.

However, if we are running, she doesn't so much as notice them in the path.

Ember was the same way, and I have the system I used to work with her in mind. To date, I can call her off mid-hot-pursuit on a cat without fail, whereas a few months ago I almost lost her to yanking the leash out of my hand. Thankfully she came back after her mission was complete.

Kairo has grown up around multiple cats, and has one at home that looks a lot like Anya named Sly. DJ has always wanted them to coexist and is considering giving up Sly so they both can have a better life - right now each has to be locked up while people are away, and even when they are home, the house is segregated. DJ wants Sly to have run of the house and for Kairo to be able to sleep in his bed with him at night.

Here is my plan - but I don't know if this will work as well for Kairo. Looking for advice.

Skill #1: Strong "Leave It"
Plan: Work with treats/toys to establish a strong "leave it" indoors. Slowly work to outdoors, and start to incorporate into walks on various objects.

Skill #2: Come When Called (outdoors)
I'm finding this one trickier, as Kairo loses focus on me the moment we step outside. However, I'm also finding that that focus has improved drastically just by the anti-tugging exercises we've been working on. So...

Plan: Start working on attention with distractions, including other dogs (which can elicit the same reaction as a cat darting off at times). Start working on "Come" on a long line. Once established, start working on "Leave It - Come" as one fluid motion - Leave It = Come, or "Come Away".

Progress Reports
Plan: Testing Kairo on leash, indoors, with Anya in various places. This obviously will not happen until the first skill seems to be incredibly solid.

Hmmm interesting. I grew up being told the tap is bad so I find it very hard to let Mylo drink that...but I'm willing to try something else for the sake of seeing some kind of change.

@Twisterll
95% of the time it's ozarka but thanks for that info wow.
I'm not sure what to do about the water but me and my gf are discussing it.
I'll read on them filters.

@Artic_Wind
Funny thing about the temperature thing.. Mylo loves to drink new cold water being poured on his bowl. Generally at my gf's house he gets served water from the 5 gallon jug. It's at my house that he gets bottled water.

@RedFlashFire05
Oh wow issues with #2? Like diarrhea?

We are switching to a new vet and bringing along the receipts we have of what Deamons been given so far. And his stool is just fine! It's as normal as can be and he doesn't seem to have any health issues whatsoever. He's basically a healthy, happy puppy!

I did find some of the old receipts of the visits to the vet and whatnot. I believe I'm missing one or two receipts of what they gave him but I pretty much remember what he got each visit. I'm just not good with remembering the names of each vaccine he got lol. But anyways, here's what he's been given so far:

On the first visit he got: Bordetella Vaccine, DHPPv Vaccine, Dewormer, praziquantel, and a distemper vaccine.

On the second visit he got some liquid stuff called "Albon oral suspension." They basically said he needed it because his stool was so liquidy and that it would also help with the gas he was passing. (It smelled awful! Shocked ) He was also given another dewormer.

On the third visit he got some pills called Doxycycline. These are the pills they gave me after I called in and told them Deamon had a little blood coming out his nose followed by large amounts of mucus. The doctor told me he was at risk of possibly having some life threatening disease that dogs pick up from being outside. He said hopefully the pills will clear up whatever he had and if they didn't, he would have to go into emergency surgery or else he would die?! Something along those lines. It was ridiculous. And he got yet another dewormer.

On the fourth visit they gave him another Bordetella vaccine, another DHPPv vaccine, Influenza vaccine, Leptospirosis vaccine, another dewormer, and another distemper shot.

Now on the next upcoming visit they want to give him another Influenza shot, another dewormer, another Bordetella vaccine, another DHPPv vaccine, Lyme vaccine, and something called Lepto VX #2.

After all this they told me he would then get his first rabies shots and other puppy shots that he supposedly needs to have once all these other vaccines are done. Keep in mind, this was all given to him within a month. We don't know if we should keep bringing him back.... they tell us one thing then come up with another. It seems like an endless cycle of vaccines and medications and I don't think we can handle spending another $500+ within a month solely on more vet visits.

Apart from that, every visit I go to the doctor seems to really keep pushing the subject on getting Deamons teeth removed and neutering him all at once. He says it would be best to get his teeth removed as soon as his adult K9's start coming in, otherwise he will have complications later on. Neutral

Hi everyone!

I hope this is the right category for this.

To give you some background, Saturday night (its now monday) we took little Aria to the park. She was there with her buddy for about 5 hours total on and off. Sunday, we had a nice relaxing day at the house and now Monday morning she has an very gurgly tummy. Last night she threw up a pile of food, all whole kibbles, must have ate a little fast. But now this morning, she has diarrhea that is a little mucus. We can tell she needs to go #2 but is having difficulties. Whenever she squats to do the deed just a tiny bit comes out and she sniffs for another spot to go. She isn't acting lethargic, no blood, is drinking lots. So i think its something she ate but i am just reaching out to see if anyone has advice to make my little girl feel better sooner. She is 5 months.

Ive given her some rice boiled in chicken stock but she doesn't like it. I finally put a little nonfat yogurt in it so she would at least eat it and she ate a tiny bit but i didn't want to over due the yogurt.

Oh my gosh, Renee!!!! Red does the same thing as Sofie!! Sometimes when she's doing her #1 or #2, she will walk. Sometimes her lower belly and inner thighs get damp and nasty too. She used to hate it when I baby wiped her down but now she just kind of tolerates it. Sometimes she'll wiggle and try to walk away but usually I make her roll over or I have her over my knee (when I have to wipe her bum) so she's captured and can't run off. It's the worst when she walks back around and steps in her deposit by accident. Luckily she's only done this once with her poo and she did NOT like it on her paw.

The only saving grace is that she's has never had the inclination to eat her own poo. My niece has a siba inu that used to do that when she was pup. It was so gross. Embarassed affraid pale I remember my niece, my sister and myself had just caught Satchi about to lunge her for poo and we all yelled out "NoooooOOoOooo!!!!" in unison as we reached for her....but alas we were too late. Glad she grew out of that though.

Tori, thank you for posting in here.

Renee, As a mod the #1 thing i try to do is look for spam, people miss behaving and answer PM questions and look at flagged post, and gather pictures from HOTM. #2 is posting on the forum when there is a topic i feel i can answer. I have never had a puppy, the #1 question around here seems to be about puppies, i really have nothing to offer on that other then to say cute puppy. I try my best to answer hiking, rescue, and other topics in the medical area as that is where i have the most knowledge. It would be nice to have a few more mods that are spread in other areas of the topics, but an Admin is a HUGE deal and needs to be someone special.

i am always free to PM as well and most of you know i do respond as soon as i can.

in order to keep this place moving it needs to progress with MODs and active people over time, for the most part all of the MODs right now have been here since the start or just after the start, thats a few years! that is pretty good if you think about it. But it is time to add some fresh blood to the mix to keep things going.

Hi, I have not posted here for a long time, because I really wanted to be able to post some good news about our puppy Kiko. He is now over 7 months old, and he is a nightmare! I do have photos all the way up to this point, but I just haven't posted them. Some day I will post them, as he is a beautiful pup -- but right now I am seeking advice and I am pretty much exhausted physically and mentally from this dog, as is my boyfriend.

Kiko has a heart murmur, for one ...fine, because that is the least of our problems. We are working with the vet on that, and the good news is the X-rays don't show an enlarged heart, so finally he is going to be scheduled for an ultrasound by a canine cardiologist who comes to town once a month.

But the main thing is his behavior. He is literally crazy. I mean he is extremely hyper-active, more than any dog I have ever known. I have trained many puppies ...well, 8 puppies, in my life, and this one is not normal. All of my other puppies learned to sit/stay/lie down/come by the time they were 10 to 12 weeks old, and do those things consistently. Even Tundra, my last Siberian Husky (who was 18 months old when I rescued him and had severe separation anxiety), learned to behave and already knew basic commands and followed them. He was very gentle and sweet.

Kiko terrorizes our home. Seriously. My boyfriend is retired and I don't work outside the home, so we are always here, at least one of us and usually both of us. This dog terrorizes us from before sunrise until after sunset, that is the only way to put it.

#1 - House Breaking: Kiko goes outside during the day. He asks to go outside. But every night he poos and pees in the house. He poos two or three times during the night. We don't understand this. He is 7 months old. I have never even heard of any dog who goes this many times, especially during the night. And yep, in the house. When he knows to go outside during the day. He gets his dinner at 5pm and we take him outside at around 10pm or 10:30pm for his last poo/pee. But every single night I am awakened by the horrible smell and I have to get up and clean like crazy. Most often twice per night. It is a very strange smell. Kiko's poo has always smelled very much like burnt rubber. It has a very odd smell.

#2 - Wakes us up before dawn (related to issue #1 above) Even though he goes outside at 10:00pm or 10:30pm to poo/pee, and THEN he still poos and pees in the house two or three times during the night ...he STILL wakes us up crying to go out at anywhere between 4:00am up to as late as 5:30am (which is like "yay" we get to sleep in!).
This is a horrible situation, because if we don't get up and take him out, he will go in the house yet again. So either way, I have to get up and clean clean clean. Or take him outside in the dark (and then we are up for the day). I basically get maybe 4 or 5 hours of constantly interrupted sleep every night for almost seven months now since we have had this dog. My boyfriend too. We are both so exhausted, and I cried today.

#3 - He doesn't understand the word "NO". He doesn't understand ANY type of discipline or training efforts. He fights us. He fights back, I mean. I have successfully trained/disciplined other dogs, but Kiko is just impossible. Okay, I know he is a siberian husky, but omg you have no idea what this guy is like. See next point (#4) below.

#4 - He bites us and makes us bleed. We have listened to our vet and tried her suggestions. He constantly jumps on us and scratches us and bites us ...she said to turn our backs and ignore him when he is like that. It doesn't help, he just goes crazy. We are both so beaten up and scratched from him. He does not let up, no matter what we do. He seems to think it is all a game. I have never ever known or seen any dog like this Sad

#5 - He eats/chews/destroys everything!!! We can take him out on a 30 minute walk, or let him run and run and run at the dog park, but even after that he is hyper and crazy. He gets what we think is the best of food/nutrition (?) (TOTW High Prairie Puppy Food) along with soooo many toys and good safe healthy treats ...but he still goes absolutely crazy the minute we aren't looking and even if we ARE looking. He eats the carpet, the couch, the bedspread, the floor, the linoleum, the shelves, etc ...and I mean he actually ingests them, not just chewing. He digs and digs on the sofa and eats anything that rips, and does the same on the carpeting. If we stop him he bites us and then keeps going. Our entire house is basically ruined and chewed up in the last seven months. And we are so worried he will get a blockage or a rupture from eating all this inedible stuff that he eats. Sad

I know I have probably left much out. Like how we love him, and how he is so cute when he finally is sleeping.
I must reiterate that I have raised and trained many other pups. But we are just at our wits end with this one. I know I will hear it from the behaviorists and trainers here on this site, and it's okay, I can take it. Let me have it, any ideas or suggestions or criticism. Anything that will help, please. We can't give him up. Nobody would keep this dog. If we did give him up he would be put down. I want to be able to live with this dog. Please help!

Any suggestions or even commiserations welcome. Smile

Like ...do any of you have any similar stories? Have any of you had similar troubles but it turned out okay?

Sorry I am just so tired. Please help!

Thank you.

How exciting Zoe. I respect your fortitude in resisting the urge to get #2 quickly. My husband bugged me after Miya was 6 months old, and I kept saying no. Having the older one trained was predominately my reason for saying no. Now that Miya is, I am ready. Names, ugh, I am not good picking out names. A dear friend, who will remain anonymous, suggested Sofie, and that is the only name we both liked. Can't wait to hear the news that you have your second one, good luck!!

#1. No running until she/he is a year old. its too hard on their developing joints and muscles.
#2. I run with mine using a running belt like this:
http://www.alpineoutfitters.net/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=255
she gets a harness and runs ahead of me, by KM 2-3 shes running beside me, by km 5 I'm pulling her a little. We dont run super often though.

For us we use a leash and collar to walk, and a harness to run. She knows the difference and knows to pull only if she has her harness on. It took a lot of training. Use that first year to your advantage and teach her to heel well, then work on training her to run when she is at least 1.

We're home and he is a gem! No whining and no sickness in the long 9 hour car ride (split into two days). He has had two #2 accidents inside but zero #1s. Those were all outside. He slept through the night except for a quick pee break at 3 am. He is just so sweet and I am in love. My breeder provided me with all of the OFA, CERF documentations, pedigree from both sides of the family a spay/neuter sales contract and a list of the sire and dams awards from dog shows. His mother is an Int'l CH and both parents are stunning with great temperaments. I am so happy with my new boy. He is a love.

Hi, all.

Nya is now 10 weeks old, and she is completely housebroken. I thought I would have had an issue with it at this point, but she's been a breeze. However, I do let her out frequently.

Though the reason I'm posting is that she wants to be outside all the time. I keep the blinds up at the back door, otherwise she will deem it as a toy for her to chew and tug at. Sometimes she will sit at the door and whine to be let outside. I know she doesn't have to go because I will have just taken her out, and she did both #1 and #2.

I may have mistakenly obliged a few times to her whining because it had been awhile since I last let her out, so I thought that may be why she's whining. When I do take her out at these moments, she may or may not go, and then she just sits in the grass refusing to move. I take her out for an extended period of time every morning, afternoon, and evening. Most of the time, she just spends it sitting and watching. We're still working on walking on a leash.

I suppose my source of frustration is that I can't take her out every 30 minutes just because she whines. Is there a way to combat this? She has plenty of toys and things to chew on. I try to play with her, but I also have other things I need to do. Sometimes the best moments are when she's asleep, so I can focus on getting something done. Any advice?

Hi, I hope it is okay if I chime in with my 2 cents worth silent

I agree with all the above advice, AND I have also found an age-old remedy for diarrhea (at least a temporary one) although it doesn't cure anything if there are underlying causes, but it will help and has been recommended and approved by the various veterinarians I have consulted over the years.

#1: Buy some good boneless skinless chicken breasts (and read the package or check with the butcher to make sure it is not injected with tenderizers/salt/juices etc)

#2 Rice (I like to use white, but you can use brown)

Boil the chicken breasts in plenty of water for maybe 30 min (even more), then set them out to cool.  You can cut them up and freeze in small portions. Leave enough chicken out for maybe a day or two, but freeze the rest.

Boil (or steam if you have a steamer) the rice, using more water than necessary (like 3 cups water to 1 cup rice) and cook until that rice has absorbed the water.  This will give you some water-logged rice and well cooked, which is good.

Chop maybe 1 cup of your cooked and cooled chicken into tiny cubes, the smaller the better, minced is good.

After the rice cools, mix even portions with the chopped/minced chicken (like 1 cup rice to 1 cup chicken, or 1/2 cup rice to 1/2 cup chicken).  You can even add a little more water to the mix if it looks a bit dry.

Feed this to your pup maybe 3X per day for a day or even two. Don't feed any other food (but provide plenty of fresh water).

This is a sure cure for diarrhea, at least in my experience ...although it doesn't cure any underlying causes of diarrhea.

You could also add rice to any of the above suggestions from people (like add rice to the cooked turkey, etc).

Aside from her meds, switching foods often causes diarrhea, even switching up from a puppy food to an adult food.  Also I agree with everybody above who stated that your pup is too young to be eating adult food as opposed to puppy food.

Years ago, I recall that purina puppy chow had milk in it (milk solids?).  Some dogs are allergic to dairy, and maybe that could have played a part before you switched to adult food?

I use Taste of the Wild, there are 2 good flavors for puppies (and many more for adults).
Make sure you transition your pup slowly when switching foods.  Start with the regular food adding just a small amt. of the new food.  Gradually mix in more of the new food, every day, so that the change doesn't happen all at once.  Sibes are notorious for having sensitive stomachs, haha.

I hope I don't sound like I am trying to be a know-it-all here.  It's just that I speak from experience and research  study in addition to listening to my veterinarians Smile

Good luck and keep us posted!

Holy Cow! Shocked I'm sorry my "2 cents worth" was so long! haha

Last weekend I took Jack up on a 4 summit adventure, i knew it would be to much for Sierra so she stayed home.
we hit 2 ranked and 2 unranked 13ers.
Santa Fe Peak- 13,180ft-ranked
Sullivan Mt.- 13,134ft- unranked
Geneva Peak-13,266ft- ranked
Landslide Peak-13,238ft- unranked
Took us 5hrs 57min, and we did 7.6 miles RT and gained 3,100ft of elevation.
link to our tracks

the drive up was not near as scary as the drive back down the old dirt mine road, i had white knuckles and thought we might roll over a few times, that's what happens when you drive up something half asleep at 6am, you don't think about the return trip!
We had a lovely solo day on the mountains and every time i have Jack out he impresses me with his skills and off leash behavior, love that boy.
Ok on to some pictures.

Hi everyone! It's been a very long time since I've posted. Kiko is now 7 months. (We think she's around a month younger then previously thought and put on her paper work because she's so small and looks like other huskies who are 6 or 7 months old) My husband and I recently found out that we are expecting baby #2. I'm due in February 2016. Alongside my husband and I, we have our 5 year old daughter and a 1 1/2 year old German Shepherd. We have a friend who knows a ton about huskies and we have been talking. He's a bit concerned for us about the upcoming changes and how things will go for us and for Kiko. He said that she sees me as alpha, and not so much the others. The concern is that she may not like the baby and will resent/act out, become destructive, and/or attack me (before the baby is born) or after the baby is born possibly attack the baby. He was telling me he has heard so many horror stories of huskies and babies, and was talking to me about the breed and how they see things, etc.

Currently Kiko is doing pretty good. She knows how to come, sit, shake, lay down, show belly. She fetches (which took so long didn't think it'd happen haha). She's doing much better on leash. Part of the concern comes from about 1 1/2 months ago or so she snipped at my daughter. I was sitting next to them when it happened. My daughter grabbed her collar to pull her away from the book shelf and she turned around, snipped at her a couple inches from her face (She did not try to bite, it was a snip. If she wanted to bite she could have honestly) and then I saw what looked like her glaring at our daughter. She has not done it since. She used to be stand offish towards my husband and especially daughter, and would not listen to either of them. She now listens sometimes to them, and seems to really like our daughter. I watch them very closely and don't let our daughter do certain things. She does not punish. She feeds and gives water to our dogs. (Not always but a good amount of the time) She plays with Kiko and when I brush Kiko she will give the treats. Sometimes will also brush her. Kiko seems to be really rather gentle with her.

My friend has suggested that we rehome her because she's young. I to be honest do not want to. I've had to rehome dogs in the past and do not want to do that because we're expecting a baby. I'm sure other people have had babies and kept their huskies. Can someone shed some light from other husky owners on this for us? Does expecting a baby mean that a pup should be rehomed? How do they do with the incoming of a new "pack member"? She is really good with other people and children. She does hackle her coat if her and I are out walking at some people. I don't know why she does to some and not others. She does fine with other animals. I'm just not sure what to do? I'd also like to add that currently I am not working. Our daughter is starting school later in August so there is more time for me to solidify training with her. Time isn't an issue, and if I am put on bed rest my husband is up to the task of walking her. Hoping someone can share experiences, advice, suggestions, etc.

ETA: I did post this in a different forum but I think it was the wrong one. x.x

They always have super gorgeous puppies. They often breed dark/agouti ones, my favorite coloring. They also have other coat colors. The breeders are nice to do business with and the two dogs I've gotten from them have been very healthy with great personalities. If I ever get a second dog for myself I will buy from them again.

I wonder if Chugach will go through the same weird coat metamorphosis Kavik did.

Thanks guys!

Hey guys,

Kygo has developed a new quirk. It has been raining a ton in the midwest and will continue throughout the summer. When I take Kygo out, he will absolutely refuse to walk on the wet grass. I have tried walking with his prong collar, enticing with treats, and walking around the block but everytime he gets near the wet grass, he stops in his tracks and will not move an inch. It's to the point where he will potty just a little but then when i bring him back inside, 10 minutes later i find that he went to the bathroom (#1 AND #2) in the hallway. He knows it's wrong and always does it by the front door but i have only been able to catch him in the act once. I tell him no, then clean it up but with the outlook on the forecast, this needs to be broken.. Tips?
