what could be causing dry skin? Empty
PostSubject: what could be causing dry skin?   what could be causing dry skin? EmptyFri Jun 07, 2013 3:41 am

Hi Guys,

Our 12 week old puppy seems to be scratching himself and has dry skin. When we got him he had a bit of dry skin but it didnt appear to annoy him, however now he still has dry skin AND he is scratching. I contacted the breeder and told her what we are feeding him: chicken necks for breakfast, advance puppy food for lunch and chicken mince with vets all natural mix and a few bits of kibble (advance) for dinner. I have also been adding some flaxseed oil to his dinner. She has suggested I stop feeding him advance for a fortnight and see if his skin improves.

However I am wondering whether it could be our ducted gas heating that is causing his dry skin? Its winter over here now so we do run the heating at night.... Not sure what we do if it is that as we need to stay warm... but anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks!

I've never heard of the brand Advance (I'm in US). Is it grain-free? Some dogs are allergic to grain. Read the ingredients list and see if there are any grain ingredients. Also check for corn in the ingredient list. Some pups are allergic to corn as well.

When Juneau was about 3 months old, she also had dry skin. It could be the change of the seasons. I brought her home during the transition of spring to summer. It cleared up on its own after about 3-4 weeks.

If you want, try giving him a bath with this shampoo. http://www.amazon.com/Earthbath-Natural-Oatmeal-Shampoo-16-Ounce/dp/B0002IEYIE Is a good shampoo for dry skin.

Check out the reviews and see for yourself! Smile

When we first brought Nanook home our vet had us use Oatmeal shampoo to help his itching. She also suggested Grizzly Salmon Oil added to his food. The bath did help and switching to TOTW has helped tons. I have not tried the Grizzly oil yet but may try it soon, the summer seems to be drying him out a little
