How many of you have huskies who bury their food outside? Mine has holes all over the yard where he buries his food. And he gets plenty of food. He isn't deprived of food. I understand that is an instinct some dogs have to store up for time of need. Just wondering how common this is in huskies and is there any way to curb that? There must be dog biscuits and other food all over the yard now! lol

How about putting poop on those holes so he can stop making the holes in the first place before he puts his munchies there?

Uh, I don't think I want to go there... lol  Besides, he would just go find another place in the yard anyway where there wasn't any hole made yet and make another.

I would just stop giving extra food until he's eaten what he has, buried or otherwise. My mom used to have a German Shepherd that would bury the food she didn't like so that she'd get the foods she did like, sneaky dog. If he's getting more than he needs I doubt your problem will stop unless you don't allow him to bury his food, which means watching him outside and interfering if he tries. I've had dogs try to bury food for later and I always interfere. I simply take the food and put it away and offer it again at the next normal treat or mealtime depending on which they were trying to bury. I don't tolerate burying food or treats, chews are a different story though.

Mine bury food all the time! I don't give them extra and hardly ever give treats. If they get a knuckle and have had enough of it, they will go bury it somewhere and will guard the area and if another dog find's it, they'll rebury it somewhere else lol.

If Nicky doesn't feel like eating dinner, she will take her meal an try to bury it in the kitchen. It's the weirdest thing, she will act like she's burying it, but covering it with nothing. It's really strange, but cute Smile

Dizzy does that too! My first husky, Tasha, would bury her poop if there was snow on the ground. She found having poop around rather distasteful.

Valerie thanks for the advice. Kelly that is too funny what yours does with the food bowl inside. That's exactly the motions they use outside burying food with the snout. And Jen sounds like you had a super clean husky, kinda like a cat burying their poop. Mine will kick back the dirt with his hind legs after he goes to the bathroom. It doesn't really cover up much, but it looks like he is trying! Smile
