How bad would it be to switch my puppy from purina one pro plan large breed to taste of the wild cold turkey? We get her in 2 weeks and don't want to go buy the purina one and spend the money on such crappy food. Want to just start her asap on TOTW... thoughts? Yes I know I can expect "the runs" lol

Can you get some of the old food from the breeder? Or possibly buy a small bag of it. I think it would be better to transition her slowly. If she has the runs you really won't know if it's just from the change of food, or if it doesn't agree with her.

I know its notsuggested to do so because of causing stomache upset but I have to with my two when we switch. They wont eat a mix of food and will just spit the old out or refuse to eat. Maybe get a small bag or ask the breeder if you could get a bit for her just so your not causing her any issues while all the upset of switching homes.

I would just ask the breeder for some of theirs, they might already be planning to give you some to take home. I got two huskies at two different breeders in two different states and each time they gave me a bag of the food, because most of the breeders want to make sure that you are transitioning them slowly.

I agree with what everyone else has said when I got both of mine they were not puppies mine you but I end up switching them cold turkey being I couldn't find any of what they were feeding my male (he was 9 months).  My female was a rescue from a shelter and I just start her off on what Blaze was eating.

But being it is a puppy you probably want to switch slowly so that it will help with stomach upset.

A little 5 lb bag of Purina can't possibly cost very much at all. It really depends on the dog and how sensitive their stomach is that will determine how bad or good things will be. Personally I'd just get a small bag to transition him over. There will be so many stresses going on for your pup coming to a new home already that I am of the mind that one less stress on the pup the better, but to each his own. Diarrhea will only complicate things for both dog and owner, not to mention I doubt your pup will feel very good with an upset stomach...I know I wouldn't. Most breeders provide some take home food as others have stated so I'd ask about that as a possibility first.

I asked the breeder to send some along but he said the airlines won't allow much. Just enough for a days worth..... DANG! I'll go buy a bag

I have switched all of our dogs over cold turkey, you may have to deal with a few days of runny stool and or gas, but other than that,we have never had any issues.

I switched mine cold turkey because the food she was given was causing the runs. After a few days of TOTW and no treats, the runs went away.

Honestly, for how little a small bag costs I'd consider it money well spent if it makes your pup's transition easier.

I've always done it cold turkey, but since your baby is flying, I would go ahead and buy a bag of the Purina formula. Flying is stressful for dogs, and her system may be all messed up from flying. I'd go ahead and just slowly transition her to her new food Smile.

The only time I ever switch cold turkey was with Yuki from BB to TOTW at 4 months simply because she had horrible runs already from the BB. When I first got all of them though, I slowly transitioned it. Yes I also went out and bought a bag of Pedigree for Link as much as I despised buying it, but its really not like its a waste of money your pups going to eat it and it would be more beneficial to keep her on the old food, as horrible as it is, even for a few days and slowly transitioning than going cold turkey on a new food.
