Congratulations and welcome to the forum!

You're going to have so many questions, so my advice to you is to honestly browse the forum and read up on things in advance Smile There's already a couple of threads on bringing home your puppy, but if I could say one thing from the start, it'd absolutely be crate training! Smile

Welcome Very Happy

What are your reasons for wanting to breed? Since you just got your first husky, this isn't a good idea, it would probably be best to wait a while before you even consider something like this. If your serious about wanting to breed, find a responsible breeder in your area and see if they'll take some volunteer help during their next litter. At the very least, they can help you learn all of what goes into breeding in the first place, it's not nearly as straightforward as people think.

If your heart it set on being a husky breeder, educate yourself, take your time, and talk to as many reputable breeders as you can. With pet overpopulation problems like we have, the last thing we need is another BYB....

Please don't take this as offensive or rude... That's the last thing I want. Please take this as you read it. Information.

There are so many Huskies in shelters/rescues/animal controls. Most of these Huskies aren't adopted in time and are put down. But for the ones that are rescued it's still a ways away from finding a home. As you have probably seen by now this is a special breed. A special breed which requires a special family and home environment. All these Huskies in rescues/shelters/ect. are waiting for this special sort of family. All the Husky puppies that are being born and sold only contribute to these numbers. And if the family who buys these puppies is actually a special kind of family... that's one more special family taken away from dogs who's time is running out.

You will not find many people who support breeding on the internet forums. Especially breed specific forums. We encourage adoption as well as well thought out and researched breeder purchases.

Unless you plan on bettering the breed (showing, working) and already have titles to prove their worthiness, you would just be adding to pet overpopulation as well as taking away possible homes for already deserving and waiting dogs/Huskies out there. I truly hope you thoroughly think this through and make sure you're making the right decision for all involved.

You couldn't have put it any better. I must have had 100 people ask me if I was going to breed Mya before I got her spayed. When my response was no, they'd look at like i'm crazy. I've people stop me and give me their numbers and actually tell me "we can make some $ together". Seriously, dude like seriously! It's one thing if you TRULY know what you're doing and are committed to finding the puppies forever homes so that they won't end up like the rest of the poor huskies in shelters. Even though this breed is totally AWESOME they are definitely NOT for every family and that is how they end up in shelters. Poor babies Sad If I were to win the lotto I would have a husky farm and save as many as possible!!

Hi, Amber and welcome to the forum! Smile Your new baby is absolutely gorgeous.

I will not add on to what has already been said because I feel that Rob, Kristina, and Melissa have said it perfectly and anything else that I say would tarnish their eloquent words. Please think about this decision and do your research before you consider adding to this amazing breed.

We adopted Loki because he was owned by extremely irresponsible "I want" kids. They were like 19 ish and they just liked the way huskies looked. They bought from some cruddy BYB and Loki has paid the price. He came with a lot of baggage for a 10 week old husky (how old he was when we got him) and now he is nearly 4 months old and learning but its a slow and frustrating process. Luckily I have the patience and the time to work through his issues. But honestly the average joe shmoe dog owner would have just turned Loki over to the shelter, or re-sold him, or who knows what. This breed needs very specific handling, very special care, and a vast knowledge of how to deal with them. Research is the most important thing to do before getting ANY breed but ESPECIALLY sled dogs. Malamutes, Samoyeds, Siberian huskies, they all need a ton of exercise, an outlet for their intelligence, stamina and energy. Or they turn destructive, escape the yard and end up in the shelter.

I work for an animal shelter and I have SEEN so many gorgeous dogs and cats put to sleep. No not even put to sleep. Killed because of stupid irresponsible owners. They refuse to spay and neuter their animals and we end up putting down healthy and happy animals for no other reason than lack of homes and lack of space.

And not to mention there are many areas that still gas dogs and cats its barbaric.

And don't think for a second that just because a dog is purebred that means they get out scott free and they will be adopted or pulled by rescue. Being purebred doesn't save them if there is no space. They are victims just as often as mutts and mixed breeds.

I know everyone is being nice and stuff but I can't help but feel a little dismayed because I have seen dogs put to sleep. I have felt life slip away so easily. And it all could be prevented if people only bred responsibly, if more people turned to adoption before breeders. And if people spayed and neutered their animals.

And just for the record the following breeds are the TOP dogs to show up in shelters: Pit bulls, chihuahuas, german shepherds, labradors, goldren retrievers, rottweilers, and various mixes of those breeds.

Labs are killed so often in shelters that honestly no one should be breeding them short of the best best breeders out there. There are soooo many BYBs its sickening.

I noticed your only 17 and I am not a person to judge by age. I started fostering when I was 16 years old after I visited my local animal shelter and adopted my dog coal. I will never buy a dog from a breeder because I know you CAN find any dog or cat in a shelter, rescue, or being rehomed by someone. I do not judge people who buy from breeders as long as they do their research and find a responsible breeder. But so many people just don't.

I would advise you to visit your local animal shelter, walk through all those kennels with all those sad faces. And anyone who could still breed their dogs after that I just don't understand. And count the number of labs while you are there.

I try to not pass judgement but I see so much death, so much sadness, and its so hard to see innocent lives ended because of irresponsibility of the people who bring these animals into the world.

Oh and I don't know how far you are from Manning, SC but here are a few of the labs... and they have a TON.. Purebred puppies to. Very sad Sad

Here is the shelter information page they have a lot of cute dogs up for adoption

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/SC219.html

And according to my search there were 1200 lab and lab mixes in a 100 mile radius to your location needing homes. Pretty sad. That is just a small example of the big picture. I am not trying to ruffle feathers or be mean I am just saying do some research before adding to the problem.
