4 rounds of shots? Empty
PostSubject: 4 rounds of shots?   4 rounds of shots? EmptyFri Aug 09, 2013 9:32 am

so i just set up the third round of shots, rikku will be 14 weeks for it, (she started at 6wks) now i thought they did the rabies with the third and that was good for their puppy shots, but the vet is saying they will be doing a fourth round of shots and that is when she will get the rabies shot.

my question is; is this because she started young? is that why they are doing 4 rounds, or are they just trying to get more money?

Dizzy did 4 rounds, his breeder did one, and then I did three, 5 weeks, 9 weeks, 13 weeks, 17 weeks. Although he did his rabies at 12. My vet doesn't like to give more than one vaccine at a time for young puppies, so we split them up. Then at 18 weeks bordatella and lyme, and 22 weeks bordatella and lyme boosters. Next week lepto, then a lepto booster two weeks later.

My breeder did one round of puppy shots at 6 weeks and I did two. One at 10 weeks and the last at 14 weeks. Oh and she got her rabies at 17 weeks old because I didn't want her to have it with any other shots. I'm a minimalist when it comes to vaccinations so she probably won't get any more except for rabies but only because she has to since its the law. I will do titier testing for distemper and parvovirus when she's a year old and again every 3 years or so

I think the vet is trying to get your money. You don't have to get a forth round and especially not at the same time as the rabies shot. There is a lot of points of view about over vaccinations so I went to the AAHA (your vet should be accredited by AAHA) website to see what the the vaccination guidelines are and was suprised to see they are pretty prudent. It say you need only 3 rounds of puppy shots at 4 week intervals (e.g. at 6, 10, and 14 wk, or 8, 12, and 17 wk). You should show this to your vet so you have a leg to stand on when he starts pressuring you to over vaccinate your puppy: http://www.aahanet.org/PublicDocuments/CanineVaccineGuidelines.pdf

+1 for excellent info and kudos for knowing about AAHA! I work, and will only work for, AAHA accredited vet hospitals.

I work at an animal hospital; we like to do the last round of puppy vaccines after 16 wks old. This means you could have anywhere from 2-4 rounds of vaccines. Both my girls had 4 rounds because we started them at 7 weeks old. As long as they have at least 2 rounds within 3-4 weeks of each other they should be fine. I'd definitely reccommend a third round of boosters just to be on the safe side.
