Hi everyone, we've just bought the first bully stick for our Luna and she obviously loves it, but she's only 13 weeks old and I'm not sure if it's not too early to give her hard chewables. Our vet told us she can have them, but I'd appreciate your advice as well. It sounds like a great idea for crate training and I'd love to use them, just wanted to make sure that (supervised) she won't hurt herself.

Thanks much in advance!

Bully sticks are not really very "hard" and she should be fine with them at this age. As with anything, supervision is recommended.

Thanks Valerie! I just re-read what I wrote and obviously if I use it for crate training, she won't really be supervised Wink, so I think we'll stick with the kong for that, but the bully stick is still going to be a nice distraction for her to chew instead of sticks, mulch and bugs. Smile

I noticed on the title u said rawhides. Raw hides arnt the greatest because they dont digest that well. I used to give koda them when he was a pup and he loved them but i found other stuff that he likes more that is safer. Like bully sticks. He also loves them! I also bought him elk antlers and he still plays with them. Elk antlers are softer than deer, and a lot of people were saying puppy can still crack their teeth on them but i found ones that have the middle exposed which is really soft and the best tasting part for the dog. Here is the link to them http://www.bestelkantlers.com/best-elk-antlers-large-elk-antler-fillet-1-lb-bag
He also likes himalayin (not sure i spelled that right) chews. Hope this helps

Here we give deer antler soaked in chicken broth overnight for Doppler which is just right enough for him. Elk antler I think would be better too for your young pup, you just have to supervise still even on his crate for sizes or pieces that might not at good size to swallow.

Bully sticks are fine. We have been giving them to Kai since she was about that age. They're softer and provide a good outlet for them to chew when they're teething. Always monitor them though, so I don't recommend them as crate treats. Stick to the Kongs, which is what we give when she's in her crate. We alternate between filling it with peanut butter and freezing it to the Kong filling that you can purchase.

When she was younger, Kai would chew the bully sticks a bit but enjoyed hiding them a lot more. She's now 6 months and seems to enjoy eating them more than she used to, but still buries some for later!

Thank you all! We do stay away from rawhides, just stick to bully sticks and chicken/turkey jerky (I'm getting a dehydrator to make my own). We were thinking of the deer antlers, but decided to wait with them a little bit, for some reason when I look at them, I have the vision of Luna breaking all her teeth, lol. I think I just have to read more about them. Smile

We will also have to wait with peanut butter as kong filling, as it's giving Luna runs - so switching to cottage cheese mixed with kibble.

Once again - thank you all for your advice!
