Any suggestions training this, as he NEVER follows the treat in my hand and often barely pays attention to it in general! Lol

I think I'm having a blonde moment. Are you wanting to train him to look at you, or teach him to know his name?

9.5 weeks. Had him a week and a half. I haven't worked on training more than 10 minutes a day but he's already really picking up on sit and we're getting going on stay.

Wanted to plant the seeds for eye contact Smile

I see. I actually would separate the two, learning his name and eye contact. I worked on eye contact with Dizzy too, and instead of creating a command or having special training time on it, I would just always carry treats and a clicker around the house. Anytime he made direct eye contact with me for any reason, I clicked and treated. You don't have to use a clicker though, it just helped me with timing. As for his name? He'll pick that up eventually.

Yeah, I started with the command called "eyes"....when I caught them looking at my eyes, I would treat them. So now that they are older they know what I mean by saying "eyes". You have to treat him as soon as you catch him looking at your eye's even if it's for a split second.
Then as he gets it, make him stare at you longer and longer...it takes time, but eventually he will get it.

Yes, I have a command for it too, "look." I trained the command later though, just started rewarding any eye contact. Smile

What you can do is show them you have a treat say there name and wait when they get frustrated about not getting a treat they will look at you for help or a clue. Then click or say yes and give it to them. My pup has it down pretty well in low drive situations now we just need to make it work in higher drive ones.

My puppy is 10 weeks and I'm doing this at the moment.
I do exactly what 'playing with the big dogs' suggests. I sit on the floor legs and arms open to appear welcoming get him to sit then spend about 5/10 mins on this task every day.
I find it's really working. Still a way to go but we're getting there !

When I show it to him and he doesn't follow it or quite understand,...he doesn't look around and eventually to me for a clue, he just flips out and starts hopping all over the place... hahahaha We need more work Smile

It sounds like your expectations are a little high for your puppy honestly. My pup was like yours and would just get super excited every time he smelled a treat and I couldn't get him to focus on anything but jumping around trying to grab it, usually biting me in the process. Smile Every puppy is different, and if he' not catching on, just work on getting him to recognize his name first. Call name, give treat. Repeat. You can work on eye contact a little later as he matures and can handle a little more cognitively.

Oh definitely. And just to clarify - I don't try to force anything. When he jumps about and pays no attention it's essentially time to quit training for the evening Smile

I can tell he's still managing understanding everything, but he's done great work with "sit" and "down" for still being so young!

I don't expect him to hit all of my requests perfectly, I'm just enjoying building a connection with him

Thanks, I think so!

I actually think that when he jumps back and all over the place it's kind of hilarious...maybe there's a way to cue him lol
