Names Taylor...

Hello, I'm originally from Southern California, I just moved from Colorado to Georgia Atlanta after graduating college. Reason I'm in Georgia is cause of work has located me here, I work with the Motion Picture Industry as a 2nd AC.

Anywho this isn't about me it's about my new "pup", his new name is Kopi. Considering the last name he had wasn't established at all with the the supposed Owners I got him off off. He's 11 months and has been nothing but joy. Here's the little information I do know about him. I re-homed him from a female who seemed to lack the capability of owning such a beautiful dog and breed. He's a little skittish but for the most part is opening up quite a bit since I've gotten him, which was only 3 days ago.

I'm a very active guy I guess you can say, I love to hike, run, swim and excerise everyday. Which is why me and Kopi have been trying to establish a bond that is unbreakable. He doesn't seem to like to get very close yet, when I try and "cuddle" he stands up right away. He loves to be rubbed on his belly and his neck. He also has an issue w/ walking on shiny tile, for instance I took him to petsmart the other day and he had a panic attack, I calmly tried to aid him in but it didn't work so well. That's the least of my worries though, it's a work in progress and I'm sure I can break that fear of whatever it may be that's holding him back from walking on the tile.

I take him for his first vet visit next week for a full look over and shots if not done already, due to me not receiving any papers I don't know. Another thing is I don't know if he's a tad underweight, but I'll find that out shortly. Only thing I do know is he's neutered. Now to the part where I am a little nervous... we have another dog in the household, it's my roommates. He's a Dachshund, they love each other already and get along well. Kopi gets along with all dogs very very well, but one thing he seems to not be doing is eating. I let him try my roommates dry dog food which was Venison and Wild Turkey with chunks of meat in it. He would not eat it, I thought maybe his anxiety was high due to relocating and the whole "move". It very well still could be, but I don't know. I then went out to pets-mart and got him some other food to try yesterday, he sure enough ate it up really quickly. It was Chicken base and vegetables. Now this morning I went to feed him before we do our routine run and hike and he only ate very little and its been the same all day. Nonetheless he's a beauty to be around and just needs time adjusting, I mean heck it's only been 3 days since I've had him with me.

Lastly, the owner lacked to groom the poor pup, do ya'll got any advice or can refer me in the right direction in purchasing a quality brush for his undercoat. I'd appreciate any constructive criticism or advice that may benefit me and Kopi in a healthy lifestyle, I'm looking forward to sharing the memories and adventures with everyone. Glad to be apart of a great community!

Hey Taylor, I'm new to this forum as well, but have been around the Husky's for a few years now and dogs in general for ... well, more than a few years.

Eating, that's a mouthful with a Husky. They seem to go off food for about any reason at all and then sometimes for NO reason at all. If your vet check comes back okay then I'd assume that it's either (1) This place is all new to me and I'm nervous (2) I'm not really hungry ... and Husky's were bred to live off the land, when they're not hungry you can hang it up, they're just not hungry.

As far as the tile at PetSmart goes, when you're at the vets, have him check Kopi's nails, I can see them in the picture and they might be a bit long and tile floors and long nails aren't a good mix. They slide too easily!

Weight, these dogs! For starters, if you think he's just a tad underweight then he's probably about the right weight. They're running dogs and they look best when they're a bit on the svelte side. And don't let the vet tell you he's underweight - vets are generally notorious for not knowing Husky's.

If you overfeed him - to get some weight on him - you'll probably succeed in doing something you don't want, he'll develop a case of diarrhoea. Easiest way to tell if a Husky's getting the right amount of food is to constantly up it a bit at a time until he becomes loose, and then cut it back just a bit.

And this is just my second post here ... I'm in trouble!!

Hi Taylor! Welcome to the forum. Kopi is so handsome, I am so happy he has a wonderful new home!

Get a slicker brush, a rake for brushing. That is all you should ever need. Other things, coconut oil for the coat helps keep it soft and strong. It is good for them to eat too!

So I'm just about to purchase these products for grooming, now do I need to get this furminator de-shedding tool, or is that unnecessary and harmful to the pup?

Definitely gonna be uploading more and more pics as the time comes. Here's just a couple.

A lot of people are against furminators, mainly because the majority of people use them incorrectly, results in damage to the guard hairs and over sheds them. Properly used, they are decent, but not as good as a rake and slicker brush- more expensive as well.
