| Charcoal whines when he get up from lay down position, it seems the pain from the area of the right hip/tight. We took him to vet on Monday 23rd March, but the vet cannot diagnosis where the pain exactly coming from. To relief his pain, vet gave a shot of anti-inflammatory under skin. Improvement does shows in the last two days but Charcoal still feels light pain in the area. Today, I rang to the clinic and be advice that he need to get on long term pain-killer subject to the blood test result. However, I am not sure what is the alternative as pain-killer would work as "temporary" solution but without identify the cause, I am worry.
Suggestions please!

| Has he had any type of injury? How old is Charcoal, it may be from getting older? There are supplements that you can give to him. Colloidal Silver, Glucosamine, and Chondroitin, come to mind. Did they do any x-rays? I know you are on the other side of the pond, so I do not know if any of those items are available to you. I know there are some threads here concerning older huskies and supplements to give to help relieve arthritis and such. I wish you luck and please keep us posted..... |

| @MiyasMomma, Charcoal is 5 years old, I have a thought about the injury might come from playing and that would be easier to locate maybe? As I can't find any bruise or lump at the tight. I have thought about the X-ray too, but the clinic worry sometimes the X-ray wouldn't tell too much. So they advise he is on a long term medication. Would you think that might be more reasonable to carry out the x-ray first, then the blood test if the x-ray can't tell? I feels so scary that if Charcoal is developing some serious medication, as I am not afford to lose him so soon as I have lost Grizzly when he was 6.

| I feel like getting an x-ray and finding out "too much" is better than not getting one and trying to turn a blind eye to something that is fixable simply by finding it on an x-ray. Chances are if it's only one side he could have pulled a muscle or ligament, or even have a micro tear in something. They can happen with something as easy as jumping at a funny angle on a walk. Those things can often be helped without surgery but you have to find them in order to help them. Don't be scared to find out what is wrong with him. If you can find out what is wrong with him you can help him feel better. Pain pills only mask the issue possibly and that's no way to live. _________________ |

| @Twisterll, Sorry about my typo earlier. Regarding the pulled muscle or ligament, how long does it takes to heal? A week maybe? It does shows improvement as I can bring his leg back further as with little discomfort and no longer see him in pain of getting up from a laying position. Also, what would you reckon his anti-inflammatory injection would last? 2 days? 3 days? Thank you in advance |

| With rest and restricted movement usually a couple days to a week is more than enough time for a pull to be healed and him ready to go again. If it's a tear it could take a little longer. The meds will probably only last a couple days and will help him get his range of motion back for that time. If he starts to stiffen back up and range goes away as time passes there could be something more to it or something is causing it to stay irritated. I would give it a week of rest and observation and if he is still limping after that then I would get the x-rays and make sure he hasn't damaged the cartilage in his hip or fractured something. _________________ |

| @Twisterll, Thank you so much for your advice and it is such a shame that my vet didn't tell me all these. |

| I hope he gets to feeling better and that it's nothing serious (I truly think it's just a pull). Sometimes I think our vets are vague so as to not frighten us, though with worry warts like us it usually just makes us worse. lol. _________________ |
