Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect. 2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff. 3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. | Ok so Riley my now 13 week and three day old male husky will not answer to his name for the life of me. I think at times he gets it and then no, just no. I realize he is still young but being my first husky I'm looking for advice and suggestions! |

Say it constantly. Every time you are addressing him tack Riley onto the end. come here, Riley. Eat your food, Riley. Go potty, Riley. You can even go as far as rewarding him for looking at you when you say his name. It takes time. It took a few weeks for my second dog to get his down too and sometimes he still just responds to any old name including the name of my other dog. _________________

dont be too stressed, 13 weeks is still young. his name is just something he will understand. i agree with what jenn has posted but the approach i took was to say my dogs name first 'loki, sit' -- 'loki, come' -- 'loki, time to go out'. thinking of it in our terms, my full attention isnt on anyone directly unless they call my name first.

When I was teaching mine his name, I started by just holding a treat or piece of food in front of him, then bringing it up between my eyes. When he was looking at my face I would say yes and give him the treat. Then I started drawing my empty hand to my face and rewarding him from my other hand when he would look at my face. Eventually I started pairing his name with the movement of my hand, faded out the hand, and if he would look at me when I said his name he got a treat. He is pretty good with his name now. The only time he doesn't respond is if he is just more interested in something else, which is pretty frequently - but on those occasions I know he hears me, he just doesn't want to listen, because he won't listen to any commands if he is particularly distracted. I found it was something I had to actively teach him instead of hoping he just picked up on it. It didn't take long using that method though. He probably picked it up in a week, and now if he is in another room and hears me say his name he will at least look around the corner to see what I want.

Hey John, Welcome! from the Big Bend region of our great state. Since I have two dogs here, I have to agree with Twister and Jay Yo, when you're talking to him, call his name first. Eventually he'll relate that sound to something you want from him. With my two it's funny, if I say " SET" they both set. If I say "Avalanche, Set" or "Sasha, Set" the one I'm calling will do what I want. He will eventually know who he is.... _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford .
