Honestly...I think any dog (and occasionally, very occasionally, a cat) is a good companion for a husky. I make this statement watching Ami interact with other dogs - he plays with anyone - from a tiny miniature doberman to a humongous Irish wolfhound (though I was skeptical of the little dogs, he moderates his play for them and the Wolfhound...he was not so sure about for the first minute or two, but then came around.)

However - for all around theatrics, excitement and fireworks, nothing beats another husky! Watching Ami and Archer (a husky mix, probably mostly husky) is like nothing else. And not for the faint of heart! The run, they tear into each other, they roll and wrestle. It is just amazing to watch.

I have a five month old and I am always looking around for the "right" breed for a partner for Cora. You have to think about what fits you and your partner, do you guys want a more laid back dog, who is eager to please and easier to train? but still high energy? A lab or a German Shepherd is a great choice

Personally I will be going with an Aussie Shepherd for my second dog if I don't go with another Husky. I like Aussies because I love to train with Cora and that is what Aussies are bread to do they are also high energy!

Thanks for the replies. Aventually I want to start bikejoring with my husky. It would be good to have another dog that will get on and be able to keep up with the husky. But be easy to train. Maybe a lab or golden retriever would be good. But then you probably couldn't beat another husky. I don't know. Decisions Decisions

Me personally my second is a gsd, will be here in 3 weeks. I do know another member here has a mix of huskies and gsds and bike jors, I believe he has two of each. One problem with labs, is as they age they will not stay as active as a husky, gsds, tend to stay more active than labs or retrievers, I also have never heard of anyone bike joring with their retriever or lab, I imagine doable. Imho, and in my minds eye, I envision work ethics and desires of huskies and gsds to be similar than the retrievers and labs. I could be way off, so apologies ahead of time, but retrievers and labs like to go out and bring back something to you. Where as with huskies they want to pull something so physical work, and gsds want to please you, and as we all know with police trained gsds, they like physical hard work similar to the husky. Whatever breed you get, I would think a similar size, and similar personality would work best. Good Luck!

Koda plays okay with my friends gsd, but He doesn't like other dogs at all, so usually he ends up sitting beside my friend while Koda begs him to come play.

To be honest, the best breed Koda has played with (besides another husky) is a pit bull. They have great personalities, can be hyper, but also pretty lazy. There are a lot of people who, lacking a knowledge of the breed, will assume they are aggressive dogs. Pit bull attacks were 100% of the time caused by an owner who trained their dog to be aggressive. Same with dobermans, malenois, gsd, Rottweilers, Huskies (am I the only one who experiences people thinking my dog will rip their face off at any given moment?), ect. They actually are very caring, gentle, sweet animals, and they have a similar energy to huskies so they play well together. Koda loves playing with one that lives down the road from us because it means she can rough house a little.

Hope this helps!

I think its the mask, Tyler - my previous husky was a black and white female with a mask just like Koda's. People would come to the door, Sasha would stand next to me and they would immediately back up, saying "Whoa...is she gonna' bite/attack". With Ami and his all white face (and happy wriggling body and tail waving), its always, "ooohhh... can I pet him?"

Amy, I think you might be right! They always call her a wolf and back up. People won't let their kids near her (not knowing she would probably only try to lick them to death.)

Wolf has been attacked three times now by pit bulls, twice at the dog park, and once on a walk at night. Both times at the dog park occurred when there were only 3 dogs there. Wolf was playing with me away from everyone else, and both times the pits came running across and went after him, both times requiring vet visits and antibiotics. The last time, about 4 months ago, one came after me while on a walk. Ended up with 30 stitches on the back of my knee, and a lot of paperwork and an angry owner. Yeah, we are not fans of pit bulls. Too unpredictable. I don't care how they were raised. On the other hand, Wolf loves GSD's, and if I didn't get another husky, that's what I'd get. Cool

Graham, I just had to go look at how Iowa ranked on the dog fighting scale. 'Cause when you have a place where fighting is accepted, you're going to have more owners who raise dogs that are aggressive. When you have (had?) a Representative who advocates legalizing dog fighting I think it's a safe bet that a larger percentage of the populace agree with him (than in other states where dog fighting is illegal and not condoned) - otherwise he wouldn't keep getting reelected.

Okay, that said, I've seen pits that have been raised for fighting - it seems to be a popular "sport" across the south and I wouldn't want to be near them in my car, much less on foot. I've also seen pits who would roll over for a belly rub just like most of our Husky's and lick you to death if they had the chance.

It's too bad that as a breed they have such a bad reputation because it's not the breed, it's the mentality of the people who raise them. They raise the dogs to be vicious and as a result they end up with a vicious dog.
