Hi from Alberta! Empty
PostSubject: Hi from Alberta!   Hi from Alberta! EmptyFri Mar 18, 2016 3:55 pm

I'll be picking up my new girl at the end of this month (She'll be about 7.5 weeks) Went to visit her at 4 weeks, but was too excited and forgot to take pictures since I was busy playing with her. I'll be visiting again this weekend, so I'll make sure to take some pictures then.

Been pretty excited and getting all her stuff ready, I think I have everything she would need. (Collar, leash and a bed are with the breeder to get the scent of the mom)

Hi from Alberta! 4wxeRS4

The crate is a bit big, but I did put the divider up, so hopefully crate/potty training won't be too much of a problem for her. I've got a small room (without carpet) set aside for her, so hopefully not too much of my furniture gets destroyed in the next couple months.

This will be my first husky, although I've had a doberman in the past.

Welcome to the forum, looks like you are pretty well set. I will mention this ahead of time, because they are pack oriented dogs, your new fur ball may prefer to sleep in the crate in the same room as you, also handy for potty training at night since they more than likely will have to go every couple of hours, being in the same room makes it easier to know they have to go out and potty. Can't wait to see pics.

Welcome to the forum. You do look set in the stuff department, now to just get yourself ready in the go go go department. They are a bundle of energy, fur, and sass.

Welcome aboard! Zhukov is my first Husky, though not my first dog, and I QUICKLY learned that crating him in a different room was a huge mistake. After I moved his crate into my bedroom, he made it through the night fairly well. Except for the potty thing. I swear to God, Huskies have a bladder the size of a thimble when they are young. Good luck, and let us know how it all works out. Can't wait to see pics of your little furball!

Thanks for the welcome! It looks like I'll have to try having her crate in my room at night if the separate room doesn't work out. My room is carpeted, so I was a bit afraid of her having some accidents in it before I could get her trained. Looks like I'll have to look into getting a carpet cleaning machine haha.

By the way, just my opinion here, but I had the same crate as you. Had. It had been my Schnauzer's crate and I loved it because it was convenient to travel with. Sturdy, yet easy to break down.

However, Zhukov decided that he did not like that crate and at 5 months old, DESTROYED it! Bent the door up. He would somehow get the bottom tray out and then reach his arm through and use that as leverage, I guess. I am not sure how exactly he did it, all I know is the total destruction that I returned home to. We were only gone 3 hours, but in that time he kicked out the tray, bent the door, ripped up the carpet underneath, pulled in the blanket that we had spread over the top and in doing so, bent some of the bars on the side. I really wish I had taken pictures, because it looked like a Silverback Gorilla had been inside that crate.

I assume that this does not happen to a lot of people, but I ended up buying a solid crate for that reason. Just something to think about.

Ummmm, Mark that is why they are called escape artists, haha. There is many a thread on here about how someones huskies figured out how to get out of their crate. I believe carbiners (spelling) works wonders on the joints of the crate? Have to look for the threads on the forum. My gsd still is crated when I have to leave for a while, and yesterday, all I could figure out was my husky, who is no longer crated jumped on top of the gsd's crate to try and help her escape, the blanket I put on top was half way across the room. Crate still intact.

Sonny, maybe opening a black garbage bag underneath the crate will help in any possible accidents? I know with my gsd pup, she whined when she had to go out, but then again I am a light sleeper.

Mark they are freaks of nature, with gorilla like strength in such small bodies, lol.

I have a wire crate, and Suka figured out how to get out of it after about week or two. I had to start putting him in one of those airline approved crates. He can't get out of that one! Very Happy

I'll probably end up having to get a travel crate eventually, but I wanted something that had a divider to use while she was still smaller for the initial training. I'll look into using carabiners to help secure the crate for now, if she figures out how to get out of it. I still have 2 weeks before I get her, so I still have some time to get everything ready, I've just been pretty excited about getting her. I'll be going to see her tomorrow, so I'll take some pictures! Should I bring her a treat? She's about 5.5 weeks now.

Oh boy! You better take some pics. If for no other reason, than to be able to look back in a couple of months and say "Holy smokes! Look how much she has grown!"

I don't know if I would take treats, only because the breeder might not want her eating anything other than what they are giving her. Call the breeder before you leave and ask. Can't hurt to ask.

Just got back from visiting her, she's about an hour and a half away, otherwise I would be out there visiting her a lot more often haha. She's out on a farm, and her parents are part of a small sledding team, and I'm in the city.

I tried to take a few pictures, but she's still pretty shy and won't look at the camera. She was trying to hide her head inside my jacket most of the time haha.

What ever you do, do NOT let your 18 year old, WWII history buff, son pick the name. I mean, Zhukov? Really? But, he wanted a Russian name to go with the whole Siberian theme.

When he was 13, he named our Mini-Schnauzer Colby, because it was his favorite style of cheese at the time....

At least he is original, I guess.

Oh my what a cutee!
Suggestion for the carpeted room. We took a chair floor pad (like they have in offices) and have that under the crate to get any dribbles that made it outside of the crate pan. Here is a LINK to a pad so you know what the heck I am talking about.
