Hi I hope someone can help.. I have a 4yr old male Siberian husky, until last week a happy ball of fur & energy, .. living the small holding dream in Devon. However this last week I’ve wondered every day if it is going to be my boys last. He started vomiting Sunday night, couldn’t hold a thing down, emergency admission over night at vet, rehydration therapy, bloods & observation.. bloods came back relatively normal he was discharged with pain meds.. Monday evening, he rapidly went downhill over night & was readmitted for sedation X-ray ultrasound scan & rehydration with antibiotics, again was released home overnight, he refused all food all his fav treats & fluid too.. spent a long night watching him fade.. Wednesday readmitted for more bloods & rehydration, still refuses food & becoming more stressed & very depressed, vet sent him home.. today When I taken him back to the vet, we have changed his antibiotic & cut out the heavy duty painkillers for something kinder.. still no real pointers from bloods & scans are clear, he has been at home instead of the vets he appears to be slightly improved... however I cannot get him to eat, cooked all his fav foods , offered raw lean minced beef, eggs fish but he won’t touch it.. he’s refusing to poop as well... we have an open door policy with our vet.. it’s been 5 days since he ate & same since he pooped, I know these dogs can slow their metabolic rate down but I’m afraid he’s going to starve.. any thoughts would be gratefully received..

First...if he's not eating, he won't poop. Second, really first, if he's sick and not eating, first concern should be hydration, quick you are addressing. We're you able to get stool sample to check for parasites, Giardia etc? Any chance he was poisoned. Deliberately or accidentally? The antibiotics and pain meds may also supports appetite. I can't think of what else to say other than to keep the very on the loop, maybe get second opinion.

I would get a second opinion. I don't understand why a dog that is showing lethargy and loss of apatite was put on pain meds. the antibiotics could cause some stomach upset but it sounds like he was having that before. In what fashion was his blood work relatively normal? Relatively sounds to me like some things were out of the ordinary. Do you know what those things were? Did the vet check teeth and mouth? Is his breathing labored? Giardia is more likely to make it where your dog can't stop pooping rather than shutting off his apatite and never pooping. It's nasty but I've never heard of it manifesting in this way. A bad tape worm might but wouldn't expect it to just kinda hit all of a sudden. _________________

First off as said the pain meds might be attributing to his loss of appetite and he's up to date on all his shots right? I had a husky do exactly this, a few vet visits and they couldn't find anything wrong, the vet recommended that i change his food, which I did, but he ate very little, more vet visits, then a friend recommended tums, I'm not saying this is your pups problem, I'm saying it worked for mine, he wouldn't take it, I had to forcibly open his mouth and even then he would spit it out, then I'd open his mouth again, put it as far back as possible, close his mouth, tilt his head back and rub his throat until he swallowed, he was not happy, but later he ate, so it's possible he might have a bad case of indigestion. Also, has anyone moved out of your household? Even another pet, he could be depressed.
