How much food ? Empty
PostSubject: How much food ?   How much food ? EmptyFri May 19, 2017 8:11 am

Hi,

I have Saska on 'James Wellbeloved' dry puppy kibble.  I was just wondering how much I should be giving her.  She's weighing in slightly low at the moment but looks sturdy and tall.  Vets happy with how she's developing (we were there last night).  When I increase her feeds, everything softens ...and too much at times (this morning was great fun!! Shocked  ).  She never seems to be full or satisfied and it's becoming really frustrating as food/potty has been an issue from I got her and I thought we were on a good balance over the last week or two... until I gave her a little extra yesterday. grrr

Question; how much should i be feeding her in approx. cup sizes per day?? ...and would it help if I mixed in puppy wet food (same brand) with her kibble?  Appreciate the help please/thankyou! scratch

If when you increase her poops get soft and her weight is fine currently and she's growing well without being overweight or chunky, then what you are currently feeding sounds to be what is right for her body. Huskies usually eat a bit less than the bag recommends. Some act hungry but you really have to judge by their body and not by their wants. Most adults on a good quality food are being fed around 2 cups a day and pups should need more than that, between 2.5-3 cups a day, until they are around a year. But every pup is different. Could take more to keep them growing properly or could take less to keep their stools healthy.

How much food ? Empty
PostSubject: Re: How much food ?   How much food ? EmptyFri May 19, 2017 11:04 am

I've got her on 2 cups as from today but I'm going to divide into 4 meals. I think it's also because she inhales it. There's is little to no crunching with every feed. This afternoon I literally sat and hand fed her from the dish to try and slow her down but it's like she just swallows them. When she's like this she just poops anywhere. Hopefully the smaller portions will make a difference.

Thankyou. I keep an eye on things and adjust the amount depending.

Take a coffee cup and sit it upside down in her food dish and put her food in around it. Coffee cups or tennis balls being in her way while she eats should help to slow her down because she will have to work to eat around them.

I use a standard 8 oz measuring cup. My slightly padded 70 plus pound boy gets a total of 2 cups a day. My tiny, 45 pound foster boy gets a total of 1.25 cups. Both boys get half a cheese stick as a treat and a chicken sweet potato leather daily.

I haven't had puppies since early 1972, well, except for son's dog that I sit for when he is out of town for work, but people here and other places suggest that puppies be fed 3 times a day. As to amount, depends on the nutrient content of the food - Orijen is reputed to be a top quality food. Use a standard 8 oz measuring cup and maybe follow the bag instructions but reducing a bit as huskies tend to be more efficient with their food them other breeds. I would say watch his weight and adjust for that but husky puppies in the first 18 months tend to scrawny, lanky...downright skinny, teenagers.

How much food ? Empty
PostSubject: Re: How much food ?   How much food ? EmptySat Nov 04, 2017 2:48 am

I was curious about this as well. I have a one year old Husky who is really tall and well, an overall larger dog than huskies I see. He is proportional, while large, and really lean. He is always STARVING. I am giving him about three and a half cups of Blue Buffalo grain free and he devours it. If I offer him a little more, he just leaves it. He still looks really healthy but I wonder if I am giving too much as well. Any thoughts?

The biggest sign you are feeding to much is if their poops become the consistency of pudding. Huskies, as Amy mentioned above, are notorious for eating less food than most other breeds, somewhere between 20-25% less. 3.5 cups a day seems a lot, but if poops are good, and he isn't gaining weight to fast, you want to prefer a slow and steady weight gain, then I wouldn't worry that much about it, he will eventually slow down on the food. Many here with adults feed somewhere around 1-2 cups a day, some self regulate, and some may go off food a day here and there. Nice looking dogs you have and welcome to the forum Smile
