Hello my name is Julie I got my first husky/malamute a couple of months ago. Her name is Bao, she's 5mths and while she's super cute she does get very hyper and of course loves to pull when on a leash. I do have her in training at the moment and am trying to get her used to a gentle leader which she hates. I was wondering if there are any suggestions on the best thing to use to keep them from pulling and walking nicely. I also just purchased a wonder walker harness today to try that but so far it doesn't seem to be as effective as the gentle leader. Also if a gentle leader is the easiest thing to use to keep them from pulling is there a specific brand I should look at that is maybe designed better then the petsafe one which works its way closer to her eye when she's pulling? Thanks for any advice!

I use a prong collar. Properly fitted and used appropriately ie, letting the dog initiate the correction I believe this is the most humane and effective device going. But get the herm sprenger, the tips are rounded.

Thanks I do have herm springer collars I use one on my dobe and had one for my Tibetan spaniel who passed a year ago. I guess I'll go back to this on my home walks. Unfortunately the place I'm training at suggest harness or the gentle leader or martingale which I alrdy know wouldn't work

@bao1 If you use it properly and show them that you know its use, then I'd think they'd have less objection. Huskies are bred to pull ... that's what that thing at the far end of their lead was for, a sled to pull all over, so stopping them from pulling is going against all their inborn nature - but it can be done. I think it's more a case of getting to agree that it's more enjoyable to go on a jog / walk with a happy parent than to pull all the time. The thing I've done with mine is the "change direction" technique. Start out like you're going on a walk, when they pull turn around and go the other way, they'll hurry up to get back in pulling position and when they do, well, just turn around again. You may not get anywhere, at least not very fast but it doesn't take more than a few days for them to get the idea ... especially if you have a treat waiting as they go past, that gets them to slow down a bit ... _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford .

For me, the problem with some of the harnesses, especially the front clasp and the ones that cross the shoulders are that they at best, change the dogs gait and worst, damage shoulder ligaments. |
