Greetings all,

I have been lurking these forums for a while to read and gather up all knowledge possible about getting a husky. I've read the "so you're thinking of getting a husky" thread, so I understand the challenges associated with the breed.

I am a graduating university student who just accepted a job requiring me to move away from my normal area of life, and I am single. These things prompted the thought of getting a dog to keep my company in a new place. The issue is, my job will require a decent amount of day travel on some days (little to no overnight travel). Do you this issue and the potential separation anxiety could be eliminated by finding a good daycare/pet sitter/kennel to take care of my potential future husky on the days where I can't make it home mid-day for a walk or play time? I realize this would get expensive, but the job pays well and being single, I won't have many expenses.

Has anyone else ever been in a similar situation, and how did it turn out? Do you think it is worth the trouble for a person in my situation to deal with a husky, or should I consider another breed (or a cat! haha).

Thanks!

Welcome! Congrats on the new job and move! You're just starting out and you're single - you will probably want to experience your new city, meet new friends and go out after work with coworkers. In addition, you may have to put in more hours at that new job while you establish yourself. That will be very hard with a husky, if you don't have backup care, a flexible job or another person in the household to help out.

I've been in your situation and had the same thoughts and decided to wait. I think that perhaps now is a great time to volunteer with a husky rescue in your area and get a taste of husky ownership. Once you feel like you could commit to a dog, consider fostering to try it out for a few months.

Your level of effort will also depend on the dog - nevertheless, you'll need to find an appropriate place to live (which may be difficult depending on your geographic region) and also need to come straight after work to feed the dog, walk the dog and socialize with him/her. Please definitely take the time to decide - your life is in transition and will change very much in the next few years. The wait was definitely worth it for me. I'm in a place where I never resent the dogs and they complement our lifestyle.
