PostSubject: Vital Essentials   Fri Jan 20, 2012 8:23 am

My local pet store and starting to carry Vital Essentials raw dog food. They gave me several samples, one being 3 rounds of frozen chicken patties. I put them in a container in the fridge to defrost overnight (the night before last). I only wanted to try one of the patties at first to see how my guy's stomach would take to it and left the other two in the fridge. Is is ok to feed it to him today?? Also, yesterday was the first day he tried the food and he ended up throwing up a few hours later, I wasn't sure if that could be related it or, but is that normal when they first try it?? The patties were pink and the vomit was green, so I'm not sure.

That's a really good raw food from what I've read and heard. Did you mix it with his old? It may have been too rich for his stomach all at once. I would try mixing a little with his normal diet over a 3 to 5 day span adding a little more each day. Sibes are notorious for sensitive stomachs and need there food changed gradually.

The vomit was green? Was it a yellow-y green like bile or a green like he had eaten grass because his tummy didn't feel well?

What do you normally feed? If you normally feed kibble you may want to feed the Vital Essentials as a separate meal.

If he's back to his normal self I'd say give it another try and see what happens. If he's still got an upset stomach I'd wait on reintroducing the Vital Essentials until he is back to normal.

I've been giving Hayden bison marrow bones along with the beef and he really seems to enjoy it! Our pet store started carrying lamb bones too, which he hasn't tried yet, has anyone else tried lamb yet??

Okay, I just saw this other post you made in another thread and wanted to ask if there's a possibility that Hayden could have swallowed a chunk of bone? I ask because sometimes, albeit rarely, my sibe will swallow a chunk of bone and then will throw up hours later in an attempt (or multiple attempts if it doesn't come up the first time) to expel the chunk of bone that didn't digest. It doesn't happen often but sometimes it does happen. I wonder if this could be the cause of his vomiting and not necessarily the Vital Essentials.

Hayden's normal diet is a dry kibble 1/4 cup royan canin medium breed puppy and 2/4 cup taste of wild lamb formula. Last night I gave Hayden the remaining 2 patties mixed with 1/4 cup of the royal canin and he didn't vomit and seemed to have done really well with it. I'm not sure what that green stuff was from the other day .... it wasn't the marrow bone, I'm not really sure what it was to be honest ... and not grass either. The guys at the pet store gave him a lot of treats, maybe that was it.

I was talking to my trainer about Hayden's new raw diet and she was telling me there are negatives about raw diets such as salmonella. After the dog eats raw meat, how long should I wait before letting his mouth touch me like at play time, so it doesn't spread germs?

My boy wipes his face in the grass outside after his raw meals. My chi girls don't. I've never waited to touch their mouths or let them touch things with their mouths.

ok that's good to know then Smile
I was freaking out a little bit, because we run a daycare and Hayden is exposed to the children and I didn't want the raw diet to get anyone sick.
