Iditarod 2012

Anyone following the race this week? I haven't found any television coverage and you have to subscribe to watch most of the videos on http://iditarod.com. They are posting the current standings.

Karen Ramstead was in 49th last time I checked this morning. I follow her mainly because she is one of the few old school teams which runs only pure Siberians. because of that she's a real long shot for finishing in the top 10.

3 mushers have made it to Rainy Pass the highest point in the race and one of the 3 is a woman, 41yr old Aliy Zirkle.

Ramstead's team of all Sibe's will always be my favorite. I'm happy to see those cute Berington twin's (first sister's / first twins) racing. I used to always think only "Helga-looking" women would race the Iditarod so it's nice to see that I was wrong!

I just want everyone to be safe. I saw that the race committee wavered on the treacherous Happy River steps.

I would love it if DeeDee finally won! She really deserves it. My mushing mentor is friends with DeeDee and told me that she just has an awesome personality. My mom's boss is good friends with Aliy Zirkle so we cheer for her too every year. She has done pretty well these past few years. I always love it when Karen finishes. I know its doubtful that she will ever win, but even finishing is a great accomplishment.

I too am really cheering for DeeDee, and at the very least getting up there for a race is a huge bucket list item for me. I'd love to actually run one, but at least in the immediate future I just don't have time to train.

When I'm out of the Navy I'm moving to Anchorage. Seriously.

Alaska is always been on my bucket list and I would love to time the visit to see the Iditarod. Not doing a cruise like everyone else, I want to see more than ice fall into the sea.

I made it up to Anchorage once on a little stop during a deployment. We were there for 3 days, and I fell in love. It was early November, but Anchorage really wasn't any colder than Chicago at that point. We went up to Denali one day, and the sheer beauty is seriously mind blowing. I think I'm going to move up there and be a bush pilot/doctor Cool

10 years ago that was my dream, to learn to fly and work as a courier pilot. Now I'd just be happy with a visit.

That would be way cool! I had a neighbor that was going to teach me. She was a member of the 99's. My mom got sick and I devoted a lot of my free time helping my dad take care of her. The dream faded and my neighbor let her instructors license laspe.

I follow Karen! She's never finished above 56th I believe and she's only one of four teams that are running purebred Siberians. There is no television coverage due to a lack of sponsors but I've been following it the best I can!

Karen is also a nice lady. She came to Oklahoma 6 years ago on put on a mushing class. I took Mikko and even though we had no snow it was a lot of fun.

Brian, I'll have my CFII once I'm finally done with this instructor upgrade for the Navy. Aaron and I keep talking about wanting to get back to OK to visit friends, so it's a possibility. There are ground school requirements and whatnot, but you pay for the gas and I'll give you lessons. It's really not hard at all, the big thing is getting over the fear of landing.

I'd really love to take a mushing class, but I think that's going to have to wait until I'm living elsewhere.

Great classic video. The best part...it explains the difference between an Alaskan Husky and a Siberian. (as most of you know a pet peeve of mine)

and don't look now but current standings in Rohn have two women in the lead. Aliy Zirkle and Kelly Griffin. Although Kelly is down to 13 dogs leaving Rohn.

Did you see that Ramstead clocked a personal best from Finger Lake to Rainy Pass (I type that like I know where that is...) last night? That means she and her team are looking good. As others have said, an all Sibe team will never win again, but we can hope for a strong finish!

I think Hank Debruin is racing all Sibes as well.

Aliy Zirkle is still giving the men a battle leading into Takotna. Aily is also only one of 4 teams in the top 10 to still have a full complement of dogs. Dee Dee Jonrowe made a huge push overnight an is on the verge of cracking the top 10. Two thirds of the race is still ahead, 623 more miles.
