PostSubject: Help :( 5 month old husky, soft-watery stool NEVER solid =//   Help :( 5 month old husky, soft-watery stool NEVER solid =// EmptyMon Mar 25, 2013 6:39 pm

my puppy is almost 6 months old and have a regular eating and pooping schedule. i got her from a breeder when she was about 4 months old. her breeder gave her purina pro plan focus (dry puppy food) for large breed. she was doing well on the food which is why we decided to keep her on purina. however her poop has been soft, sometimes watery (also had something to do with her puppy vaccines (corona).) but most days its soft and never solid, sometimes it gets really soft and watery like and that usually happens when i give her treats and dental treats/chewys shes teething so we usually give her one or two dentals daily for good her teeth and 1-3 treats for good behavior in between. also, we feed her 2 1/2 or 3 cups of food daily. usually 1 1/2 cup 7AM and 1 1/2 cup 6-7PM. but thats basically all she gets.

sadly we had a few people over yesterday and they gave both my dogs bacon Help :( 5 month old husky, soft-watery stool NEVER solid =// 1625187496 and didnt found out until later. she usually poops after every meal, and didnt poo last night Sad Sad and this morning she didnt finish her food and her poo was VERY VERY watery Sad Sad Sad

a few wks ago i made this thread
https://www.itsahuskything.com/t8828-new-puppy-please-help#138721 and this forum has been very helpful. i have been hesitant on making a switch as i dont want my puppy tummy to get upset. im guessing she has a very sensitive stomach since she didnt handle the bacon well compared to my other dog. her tummy has been making noises too. and usually when i open the cabinet where i keep all the treats she gets excited and would run towards me. always the first in line. this afternoon she wasnt interested at all Sad Sad i said i would wait until she finishes the 30 lbs food i got her but that would probably take a few more wks and i dont want her to suffer more.

so if anyone here can help me out ive been lookking on making a switch from purina pro plan focus to blue buffalo BUT cannot decide which one Sad im looking at either:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12152261&lmdn=Nutrition+Option&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo#RatingsDetail

or

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2750075&lmdn=Life+Stage&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo

my puppies poo is NEVER solid Sad its usually soft even before the bacon. so if anyone here feeds their pup blue buffalo i would love to learn more about it or any suggestions

This is just my opinion, as I'm sure you will get a totally different one regarding BB from someone else BUT your pup sounds just like my girl. When I first brought her home her stools were raunchy and never firm so I switched her to BBW puppy after hearing so many good things about it..However, it actually made things worse....gave her straight pudding poops, awful non stop gas, vomiting so I ended up switching her cold turkey to Wellness Core puppy and she LOVES it way more, stools are firm, no vomiting, no gas Smile

Blue Buffalo has had a bunch of complaints even though they state their food is fine, I disagree as Selena's symptoms are comparable but I;m sure people on here will disagree and that is fine but here is the link in case you wanted to check it out!

We are going through the exact same thing with Athena! She is 7 months old and we have been trying to get her stool firm for a long time. We are in the process of switching her food to Orjen 6 fish, as it is grain free, has the proper Calcium to Phosphorus ratio and she loves fish! She is currently on 50% Orijen, 50% bland diet while we are in the process of transitioning her over. Her poo was initially soft, but it has been firming up nicely!

Just like Laura, I have heard bad things about BB. Other good foods that were recommended to me were Taste of the Wild, Earthborn and Acana.

Can I combine these threads? Is there a reason you made another thread here? I just like to keep things organized Smile

I always suggest getting a tummy back on track before adding something new. I would try giving her two scrambled eggs and maybe some frozen green beans twice a day. Get her stools firm, and then try switching her to any formula of BBW that you would like.

is it this one http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/products/6fishdog.aspx? what stores usually carry them? i need to read more about it . also can i ask , since yours is 7 month old im wondering if ur pup is still teething? one of my problems is whenever i give my pup treats to chew on that also upsets her tummy and makes her poo a bit watery, and if she doesnt get any treats for the day her poo goes soft again. Sad Sad

Well she is almost 5 months now and this was just recently over the past couple weeks that I attempted to feed her the Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy formula. My vet said because it is very rich a lot of dogs tummies can't handle it.

As as far as the teething, Selena has lost 3 teeth in past 3 days! I would stay away from all treats with her stools like that (I refrained from dog treats until I got them back to normal and she didn't have a clue lol). An occasional one here and there but instead I give her green beans, carrots, bananas, apples, etc. My girl loves to chew on a frozen wash cloth, ice cubes, Nylabones.

Yes that is the link to the Orijen 6 fish.

Athena is still teething as well. She gets Grandma Lucy's Organic Oven Baked Dog Treats in pumpkin, because pumpkin helps firm up stool. She loves them! We don't give her a variety of treats because that makes her stool soft. A good alternative to giving chew treats, is a deer or elk antler. Athena will chew on hers for hours. They don't smell, don't make a mess, and last forever! You can get them online or at your local pet store. Petsmart, Pets Supplies Plus and Pet People (stores in Ohio ) all carry them.

She also loves her Kong! We put peanut butter and some of her treats in it, freeze it, and give it to her for a snack. That keeps her occupied for a while as well. You can gets Kongs at your local pet store as well.

No worries, it all just seems the same to me-- working on your pup's tummy issues Wink

No, just feed her eggs and beans for a couple of days, no kibble. She'll get the nutrition she needs from that and it should calm her stomach down until she starts producing normal stools.

Carrots are okay, but they aren't as easily digestible. You can get frozen green beans in the grocery store. You don't really need the beans though-- they just are a healthy filler. The eggs are really all she needs.

She will be okay on this for a few days and hopefully her stools will start to be more formed and regular. Once they are, start her on the kibble of your choice slowly. Maybe about a cup 2x a day and slowly work her up to 3 cups total for the day.

Great to hear! Keep it up for a day or two. I don't usually recommend rice because so many huskies are grain intolerant. That's why I say scrambled eggs and some vegetables. If she does well on it, that's all that matters Smile

Wait until her stools are solid and formed for one FULL day. Then start transitioning her to whatever kibble you choose Smile

That is great to hear! I am glad you chose Wellness Core, Selena absolutely loves it! I myself didn't mix the BB in with the Wellness only because I believed that is was caused all the problems so I just switched her over cold turkey but if you don't want to do that you can gradually do it. Start with 75% what she is currently on and 25% Wellness for a couple days, then 50, 50 and so on until all Wellness over a 2 week duration or so. Selena didn't have any problems with loose stools with the switch (they actually firmed up the first time) so it was absolutely fine!

As far as the treats...I feed her Wellness treats too

(I prefer the yogurt, apples and bananas flavor and break them in pieces)

If you want some things for your pup to chew on through out the day...I would recommend bully sticks (only made in the USA) and antlers! Smile

If your pup is about 6 months old, you can feed her 3-4 eggs and 1-1.5 cups of a single vegetable source, 2 times a day. That would be about 6-8 eggs and 2 cups of a veggie. The eggs is a neutral protein source, and the veggie is to give her fiber and bulk so that she has a BM at least once a day. (I fed my 5 yr old female 3-4 hard boiled eggs and 1 cup of carrots, 3 times a day when I had to put her on a bland diet).

If you prefer to scramble the eggs, use a dry non stick pan. If needed, use very little olive oil so it doesn't stick. Otherwise, hard boiled eggs are a lot easier to cook without having to add anything to it.

As far as a veggie, my female liked carrots, so I chopped them up and blanched them. However, no salt canned green beans, drained and rinsed is a convenient option. You can even get frozen green peas and thaw them out as another option. But pick only one veggie so you limit the ingredients you are feeding on a bland diet. The purpose of a bland diet is to to 'reset' your pup's digestive tract and eliminate all but 2 ingredients so that it will be easier to figure out what is causing an upset tummy.

As far as I can tell, huskies under the age of 1 year old tends to need extra time with a transition to a new food. So, once you start your pup on a bland diet and get her back to normal stool consistency, you'll want to keep her on a bland diet for about 3-4 days so her tummy can settle. Once her tummy settles after a few days, then you SLOWLY add the Wellness Core to her bland diet. To do this, you will start with a 74% bland diet, and add 25% of kibble. This means that if you are feeding 4 eggs and 1 cup of veggies twice a day, you will have a mix of 3 eggs, 3/4 c veggie and about 1/3 cup of kibble all mixed up, and you'll feed this mix twice a day. If she is still having normal BMs, you will want to stay on this mix for another 3-4 days, to keep her tummy settled. After 3-4 days of 75%/25% mix, you can go 50/50 mix which would be 2 eggs, 1/2 c veggie and about 2/3 cup to 3/4 c of kibble. If your pup does well on a 50/50 mix, then keep feeding this mix for another 3-4 days. Then after 3-4 days, it'll be 25/75 mix of 1 egg, 1/4 c veggie and 1-1.25 c of kibble.....then it would be all kibble.

If at any time she starts to have soft stools again, then she may have a slight intolerance to something in the formula of Wellness Core you are trying out. You would then go back to a full bland diet (or the mix ratio where she was doing OK) and start over.

This will take time and patience but it is important to do this slowly so you do not upset her tummy again!

Glad I could help Very Happy ! I'm sure she will love them! As far as the puppy formula I only get the soft chewy treats in puppy. The Wellness bars (your orange box) I don't believe they make puppy but it's totally fine they are just larger that's why I break one into 4 or 5 pieces. I do recommend sticking with just one kind of treat at a time (I started with the hard treats over soft treats) until her stools are completely formed just incase these don't agree with her! Smile

Plain steamed carrots are OK.

My pups are wearing backpacks made by RuffWear. They carry some water and some treats when we go hiking.

I would recommend holding off any treats for now, because you want to limit ingredients while you are trying to figure out what ingredients may be causing soft stools. If you put her on a bland diet and give her all kinds of treats, you won't know what is causing soft stools. So for now, just feed the bland diet. However, if you are going to use carrots in the bland diet, you can give her raw carrots as treats at the same time.

If she is improving on the bland diet, and want to give another kind of treat, you can give one of the following at the same time: fresh apples, with the core cut out, or a couple of pieces of banana. This way, you are only introducing one other ingredient.

The whole purpose of a bland diet is to limit all the ingredients in her diet to only two, and slowly add other ingredients to know exactly what is causing her tummy upset. If you start giving her all kinds of treats at the same time, you will not know what is causing her tummy upset.

Funny Balon had that problem and switching him to BBW did the trick, I wouldn't feed him anything else.
