Found a damn flea. Empty
PostSubject: Found a damn flea.   Found a damn flea. EmptyThu Aug 02, 2012 3:51 am

Alright, I found a flea on Cato - just one and very little dirt. I have yet to find one on Delilah.

I rushed out to meijer (kind of like walmart) and purchase K9 Advantix II and have applied it to both dogs. So far so good - I did a good skimming of their coats and foudn no other fleas.

Is it a very effective topical? I hate to use topicals, but I couldn't chance an infestation.

Tomorrow I am going to grab capstar and give them each a dose to be safe and an IGR for the house.

I didn't bathe them, and I am hoping this isn't a mistake, but since I saw hardly any thing on them, I wasn't too worried.

Any extra advice?

If you applied Advantix, I'd hold off on the Capstar for 30 days to prevent over medicating.

The fleas jump on for a snack nad jump back off again once they've had their fill. I'd wash their bedding and get something for the carpets.
I know it was just one, but just to be on the safe side.

I could be mistaken but I thought it was safe? It says you can use it with topicals

Capstar is he one time use flea med that only kills whatever is on them. Unlike Comfortis which is monthly.

I would just wash all bedding, vacuum the house especially the rugs, and check them closely for the next few days. Personally I wouldn't use advantix and then Capstar immediately, I think that's a lot at once on the dog but that's just a personal opinion. If it says it's safe it should be fine.

I've used Advantix on Adobo & Biko for several years, I've yet to ever see a flea or tick on them.

I use Triflexis. The heart worm/flea combo. It's cheaper than buying heart worm and flea meds separately. My two had fleas when I bought the first dose of the summer and by nightfall all the dead fleas were literally falling off of them. It was kind of gross. Lol!

Well, the dogs officially have fleas! AHHHHHHH! I would have never realized until the vet spotted one on Mya yesterday. He gave us one comfortis pill for Kody and Mya, but didn’t give us one for Asia. Actually, I should say that the vet assistant didn’t give us one for Asia. They were handed to Ivan and of course he didn’t realize there was only two. I gave the pills to Mya/Kody yesterday and was going to call the vet to see if I could pick one up for Asia, but looked online to see about just buying a pack. Ummm..

http://www.1800petmeds.com/Comfortis-prod11039.html

Those side effects are NOT COOL! Vet said to feed it with a meal since it just cause some tummy upset, but didn't mention anything else.

Have any of you had any experience with Comfortis? Now I'm scared to give one to Asia! Mya and Kody are fine though.

I use - Cato gets one for each show he attends (monthly of course)

Never had an issue and I like it better than topicals. Just give it with food and you are a-ok. But, I do the illegal thing and get a pill for 60 - 120lbs and split it in half. Does the trick and its a lower dosage per dog Wink

I love you Megan..lol. You took the words out of my mouth! I was going to ask if you thought getting the 40-60lb pills and take a portion off for Asia..lol. She weights about 32-34lbs.

Don't split the pills in half. They can't guarantee which side of the pill the flea product is on. A lot o people were thinking the product wasn't working when in fact, people were splitting the pills and the medication was on the opposite side of what was given.I had a seminar in this not to long ago. Very safe product, it's not a chemical, it's a bacterial fermentation process in the pill (the bacteria isnt in the pill the fermentation process is, the atory about how it was discovered is pretty neat) that kills fleas within 25 mins.

Brooke, not disagreeing with you. But, when I called the company they stated that the active ingredient was equally disbursed in the entire pill.

Hm, the people at the seminars must have been off their rockers then! Maybe they just wanted everyone to buy the appropriate size lol they could have just said that! I hate when spokespeople give false information!

Well, ya just gotta think about it - if a pill can treat 60 - 120lbs...how safe is it to give that super high dosage to your 60lb dog?

Brooke, I started doing it after a suggestion from a breeder friend. But, I have a holistic vet who agreed with the practice. She said the dosages are quite high in it, so its not an issue.

Ok got to work an I called the company LOL the lady said that it is safe in high doses because the active ingredient isn't chemically based. Idk lol sounded like their normal sh-peel. O and she said the they can't offer refunds if the owner splits the pill, I told her what the people at the seminar had said and preached and she said it was false, she asked for the seminar date and where it was located silent think I got some people in trouble haha o well!!

I am too!! My goodness! I feel like a terrible person for giving false info to so many people! Ugh! I've been thinking about giving Heartguard plus and Comfortis instead of Trifexis. I'll get the lower dose instead of the higher dose Smile

Brooke, I just don't give them at the same time. They have to be at least 2 weeks apart...but that's me being neurotic.

The great thing about Comfortis is that it really comes in and DESTROYS. I don't even use it all the time. Just as needed.
