Sources of raw pet food? Empty
PostSubject: Sources of raw pet food?   Sources of raw pet food? EmptySun Sep 02, 2012 6:24 am

I was placing an order today for some kangaroo meat and chicken when this question comes to my mind. Where does these raw pet food come from? It says it's for pet consumption not human. Does that mean it's some kind of spoiled or degraded food. There are a lot of retailer selling raw pet food (not mince only they also have different cuts or whole meat if I order in bulk). The bulk price is quite cheap like $2/kg for whole beef and $2.50/kg for whole kangaroo if you buy 25kg/55lbs. If you buy per 5kg it's going to be slightly more expensive.
The company has been supplying pet food for over 10 years and recently started retailers pack as well. Two kinds; frozen without preservatives and fresh with preservatives.http://www.primepetfood.com.au/Pages/Our_Range/Prime_100_Fresh_Frozen.aspx http://www.primepetfood.com.au/Pages/Our_Range/Prime_100_Tray_Packs.aspx
I bought both retailer pack to try and the meat seem nice. But I contacted the company to buy in bulk cause the retailer pack is expensive with is about $6/800gm for beef and $8/800gm for kangaroo.
Considering all these, is it safe to feed them these for breakfast and lunch (for puppy).
They get chicken quarters for their evening meal so their breakfast and lunch is boneless.

Please give me your thoughts on this as I'm still new to raw feeding.

I'm sure the food is fine. Just because it's labeled as not for human consumption that does not mean it's spoiled or degraded. Foods for human consumption have to be handled differently and with a lot of restrictions for our safety. Food for pet consumption does not have to meet such rigorous requirements.

Yeah I asked the company about it. They said it's the same meat that human eats. Just that it did not go through some kind of process suits for human consumption therefore the price is low. The lady even said that we can also eat the meat if cooked thoroughly. It's a family business, so guess I'll trust it.
Hey Val, may I know where and how do you get your dog's food? I'll be moving to Malaysia in 4 months to work there. Tried checking a lot of website but I couldn't find any frozen pet food supplier. Think I shall get it from butchers and supermarket but what kind of meat/parts should I get. The cheapest beef in the supermarket is $10/kg and they eat about 10kg+14 chicken quarters a day. If I buy like that, it's gonna cost me $600 per month for only food. What should I get actually?

I buy my meat at supermarkets. I buy whatever I can get for $1/lb or less. Every week when the sale ads come out I flip straight to the meat section because I like to wait for meats to go on sale and stock up when they are are their best prices. The commissary has more meats in my $1/lb limit than typical supermarkets. Mostly my dogs eat chicken, turkey, and pork. Beef they get when I share whatever extra beef I have from what I buy for our own human dinners (I'll set aside the extra raw beef before cooking). Holidays are a good time to stock up on meat when they go on sale. Another thing is buying in bulk at warehouse stores. I buy different chicken parts in bulk at places like Sam's or Costco at a bulk discount if I buy a minimum of 60 lbs.
