In desperate need of training tips :'( Empty
PostSubject: In desperate need of training tips :'(   In desperate need of training tips :'( EmptyTue Dec 04, 2012 5:04 pm

Hiya everyone ive not posted on here for a while as i thought we were getting somewhere with Coby!

Tonight he has got off his lead whilst we were out on our walk. I use a canny collar with him due to his pulling, well when we walk past other dogs he pulls like a train to go near them, im not sure why but he makes grunting sounds and sounds vicious!
Well he did it tonight and pulled so hard that his canny collar tightened and wouldnt release so i stopped to loosen it for him and somehow he slipped out and ran. Now i know huskys are renowned for running off, but he kept running everywhere, infront of cars, he even ran up to a dog and the owner said that he tried to attack his dog & he tried to bite me before he even got off his lead!!

I seriously have no idea what to do! I have two young children and do not want him to harm them!

He has alot of aggression to the point that i cant give him a bone because he protects it and growls if you go near him.

People who have read my posts before will know that ive not had Coby long and he was abused by a previous owner. Ive tried training him but he just seems so far past it! He fights with Mia occassionally but it is so vicious its horrible!

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!! I NEED TO CHANGE HIS BAD HABITS ASAP!!

First, don't stress, don't panic, don't do anything that will cause emotions for him to pick up on other than calm and happy. It'll only make him behave worse.

For the leash, I would take it back to step one. I don't remember if you have a backyard. If you do, perfect. If you don't, see if you can find another place without many distractions. Walk him around on leash in this low-distraction environment. Treat him and praise him when he's behaving as you'd like. The excitement he gets when he sees other dogs, is he that way with Mia? If so, maybe Jake could bring Mia out on leash and you can practice having Coby sit when he sees another dog. If he doesn't sit and keeps pulling, have Jake and Mia leave sight. You can gradually move to areas with more distractions. Maybe at first just standing in front of the house without walking around the block or anything like that. At least then maybe you can see coming distractions and interrupt him before he even knows what's going on.

For the food aggression, handfeed him everything. Meals, treats, bones, anything. Have it in your hands. Eventually he'll learn to trust you and other humans. Reward him any time he accepts food from you with no aggression.

The other thing I would suggest is bringing in a behaviorist. I know it's pricey, but I think it's worth it if it protects others from getting hurt.

Oops I just wrote a really long post and managed to lose it.

Shae has some great ideas, especially about building up distractions gradually.

I think you will make faster progress if you consult a behaviourist. I'm not sure how close it is to you, but I've heard great things about the University of Lincoln's Animal Behaviour Clinic http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/dbs/abc/default.htm. They give a discount to people who are willing to allow the consult be used in teaching. If you have an insurance policy for him, it's worth checking it as some policies cover behavioural issues.

When he reacts on the leash, is he wanting to meet and play with the other dog, or is he fearful? Drayton Michaels has some great videos in which he shows how to work on leash reactivity, including this one: http://www.dogstardaily.com/blogs/drayton-michaels-ctc-works-leash-training-seymour-nyc. If Coby is very fearful, then BAT would be a good idea; basically it rewards the dog with increasing distance for good behaviour.

As for the resource guarding (food aggression), don't give him a need to guard any more by not taking things off him. Instead start training him to swap with you, e.g. to swap one toy for another, or a toy for a treat - you might need to make the new toy seem very exciting to begin with. Also teach him a leave it command, and drop it. Here's Victoria Stilwell teaching leave it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVJiwa9LHiw.

Since you have children in the house, make sure they know not to reach out and take anything from him, and don't leave them alone if you can't supervise.

Taking on an older dog can have it's challenges, but it's also very rewarding as you see them settle in, relax, and turn into a happy well-trained dog. Thank you for giving Coby a home, and good luck with the training.

Im very unsure wether he is pulling to play because as i said he was grunting, He also stands up on his back legs and pulls. I have no control over him.

Ive just fed him his dinner alone. He will sit and wait when told, i can put the dinner on the floor and he will still wait, then i told him to get it. I left him for a little bit then told him to leave and he growled, so i told him to leave again and he growled and lay down infront of his bowl still eating and started to scoff it really quickly. Ive just left him now because im actually scared of him, when it comes to his food aggression and i know its not going to help but i dont know what else to do. All of the stuff with him is making it difficult for me to want to be around him, which i really dont want!! Sad

I know it can be scary but definitely try not to show that. Then he'll keep doing it because it gets him what he wants. Try handfeeding and see where that gets you. Sometimes Callie gets really snatchy with treats and if I close my hand around them, she takes them more gently. Maybe if you try this with a bit of kibble it'll teach him that you're in control. If he shows aggression, put the bowl up and try again in 10, 20 minutes. Show him that you control the food and he has to respect you to get it. It might also help to tire him out before dinner so he's more likely to go with the flow.

It's better to teach leave it with small things, and then only gradually build up to big things. A bowl full of dinner is a big thing and so it's hard for him to leave it - and if you don't know his background, for all you know he has gone hungry or had food taken from him regularly in the past. He is still new with you, so he doesn't yet know that he will get fed every day.

If you start with something small, like a tiny treat, then you set him up for success in the beginning, and it gives you a foundation to build up to the bigger things.

Does he make this grunting noise in any other situation? I know it's sometimes difficult to determine what different dogs' noises mean, especially if he's a relatively new dog.

I would argue that if he's rearing up, he probably wants to play (In my opinion anyway).

Is his tail wagging though? Are his ears up or down?
