Walking a 10 week old pup Empty
PostSubject: Walking a 10 week old pup   Walking a 10 week old pup EmptyThu Aug 30, 2012 1:15 pm

How often/long should you walk puppies? I give Nikko (9 months old) 4 walks around our complex per day. Each walk consists of ¾ mile and takes about 15 minutes. I walk him at 6am, 5pm, 7pm and 9pm.

Since I have gotten the pup, I have been taking him along on some of the walks as well. I usually take him on 2 of the 4 walks with Nikko. Is it too much for a 10 week old? He does so-so on the leash, I just wanted to get him used to it young, plus when I got Nikko I started walking him everyday.

We don’t run into many, if any other dogs on our walks, but should I not be walking him until he gets all of his shots? Any suggestions would be great!

I wouldn't recommend walking him until he has his second shots at least, better to wait until the third since there are still bacterias and diseases carried through urine and feces that could be contacted while on your walks. Also I believe as far as time goes it's 5 minutes/month... i believe that's the rule. so a ten week old puppy would be able to go for 10 minute walks at a time, 12 weeks old 15 mins, 16 weeks 20 mins and so on. I believe that's the general time

Yeah I think I will hold off on anymore walks for awhile until after he gets his third set of shots. Now, for the time, is that per day or just per walk?

I would say 2/3 times a day would be okay for your puppy as long as it is spaced out throughout the day ie. early morning, afternoon, night. Don't forget too that training and mind stimulation is works just as well as that 10 minute walk Smile

Great points brought up here. Yes, 5 minutes per month of age is the guideline for walking a puppy. You don't really need to scale back the number of walks per se, but definitely the time for another couple of weeks. Then gradually build up to the next increment. And as Robin said, a little mental exercise goes a *long* way. That one got us through a lot of rainy days down here Razz

I think I might just hold off at least until after the vet visit on Saturday. I don’t want him to pick anything up outside. Each of my walks are only about 15 minutes so that should be fine, but I have to walk both of them at the same time and right now that is a huge challenge! Maybe when Yukon is a little older and better on the leash it won’t be so bad!

Walking a 10 week old pup Empty
PostSubject: good advice   Walking a 10 week old pup EmptySat Dec 29, 2012 3:27 pm

My puppy is 10 weeks and I wanted to know about walking him. I read some good advice. He was sick when I got him, and he have not gotton any shots yet. He suppose to get his first show in a week. He is doing allot better now. The vet wanted to wait before giving shots. I advice not to buy a puppy off craiglist. I sure everybody is not shady. I just happen to find a shady person. I love my Captain. The vet suggested I take him back. I thought if I had given bith to a sick child, I would not take him back. You love and raise the best you can. He brings joy to my twins and he loves for me to play with him.
