Won't come out of crate for mom-Help!!!! Empty
PostSubject: Won't come out of crate for mom-Help!!!!   Won't come out of crate for mom-Help!!!! EmptySun Jan 06, 2013 1:51 am

Hello Everyone!

I'm in need of some help and advice. My puppy Cash is 11 weeks old today. He's a great puppy, full of energy and makes me laugh all the time. I am 32 and live at home (help take care of parents) and a teacher. When we first got Cash I had just been out for winter break, so I was with him all day, every day. I got up over night with him, fed him, everything.... He is very attached to me, but skittish around other people. He has just warme up to my dad this week (after 3 weeks) but my mom he is still jumpy around. He's not your "typical" puppy that I've read about in regards to huskies, he's leery of people and gets very shaky. But with me or in his house or yard, he's perfectly fine. And he LOVES his crate (plays in there, no problem in there at night, at all).

My problem is this. A couple days after we brought him home my mom was trying to play with him and scared him, completely unintentionally. Ever since then he's VERY JUMPY around her, barking at her at times, but never appearing aggressive. He runs to his crate at times when she's with him and refuses to come out. We've tried treats and they worked for a while but not anymore. I don't know what to do, she doesn't want to grab him and pull him out but he needs to come out for her. She will be the one watching him when I go back to work and I don't want him to fear her or become aggressive with her. He'll take treats out of her hand and come up to her, but he's very leery when he does and only gets as close as necessary (though is getting better).

Please help and ask any questions you may have! I want to do what is best for him and everyone!

THANK YOU!

It's going to take time, is the only advice I can offer. Its good -not- to pull him out of the crate, thats his safe place, you don't want to drag him out. He needs his safe zone. Maybe have her feed him and take him on a couple walks out to the yard and whatnot, they probably just need some bonding time. My pup Yuki was very cautious of my mom at first (shes not a typical husky either, she hates people) but now as soon as my mom gets home Yuki will run up and 'woo' at her Very Happy

Has she tried just opening the door, walking away to go about her business, and letting him come out on his own? Nanook does this sometimes if it's my hubby and I'm not home, and it usually takes him 5-10 minutes to emerge.

I think Megan has a good suggestion. I wouldn't force him of it either. It might just make it worse. Walks and more activities together can help.

Oh, and if he refuses to go out with your mom right now, then go out with your mom so he knows you're there too. Start walking away a bit at a time, until eventually she can take him out without you. It may be a small case of separation anxiety as well.

Kay will run from my brother and hide from him but that's because he chases her around. So now she's very skittish around my dad too and will run whenever he moves. Maybe have your mom drop treats on the floor when she's just going about her business. Everyone else has given great advice Smile

Bode was very shy as a young puppy and still is a little bit with new people. What helped a lot was for him to realize people are nice and that treats come from people! On walks we would always have small treats with us so if a stranger asked to pet him we would give them treats to give him and have them have Bode come to them, not force the interaction. It will take time, but I'm sure he will open up. The only problem with that method is he's always looking for treats from everyone, especially at the dog park!

One good thing about this though is that you know that at least he sees his crate as a safe space!

THANK YOU ALL for your wonderful comments and advice!!!! I REALLY appreciate it! Sorry it took a few days to respond, I have not been online very much since I posted this. Cash is doing better, treats are helping and the three of us are trying to make this work. You all are life savers, I was worrying so much about this.....
