So Alki does something strange and I don't know if it's just normal for the breed or what. When you hold him, if he isn't sleepy, he freaks out. He starts yelping and thrashing and biting and scratching. He doesn't stop until you let him go. I've tried different ways to stop him and it doesn't work. I tell him no but he doesn't stop. I currently has scars on my arm from his first freak out and I have three gashes on my neck from his freak out tonight. I'm used to puppies whining or trying to get away if they're not ready to settle down, but this is WAY beyond that. Has anyone else had this problem?

My Maya will let you hold her for a little bit (when i say little bit i'm talking about 5 seconds) and then she will start crying, yelping and will start wriggling around wanting down. she doesn't try to bite or scratch.

Kale did when he was 7 weeks. I know some people are gonna call me abusive or a bad dog mom, but I don't give a rats a$$. I tucked Kale under my arm like a football with his head out and my arm and hand supporting his undercarriage, and let him throw his tantrum. He needed to know that me holding him, picking him up, etc wasn't his call. It took about 15 mins for him to settle. When he was quiet and calm, I gently set him on the ground (I was sitting during this) he was so tuckered out from his fit he slept for about an hour. He has never thrown a tantrum since and I pick him up all the time now. (He's 60 Ibs) For all those who are against it, I'm not recommending her to do this, I'm just sharing what I did with kale.
Kale at 3.5 months, letting me cradle him.

Ahh, he's so precious! I tried doing that this time, but I guess I wasn't holding him tight enough. I think what you did was fine. He has to know that you're above him. That's what I want Alki to figure out, but I didn't know if there was a good way to do it. Thank you! Next time he does it, I'll try that and just won't let him go until he calms down. I would have tried this time, but he hurt my neck so badly, I ended up just letting him go. :/

Check out this video. It isn't about picking up the dog but the same principals apply to training the dog to like/accept other behaviour they don't enjoy.

Mine goes completely limp and happy when she's picked up, unless there are other dogs in sight, then she wants to plaaay. So I don't really have experience with this, but maybe you could try getting something he likes to chew on for a while, a bully stick or sweet potato thing, and hold it while he chews it. Try having him in your lap or with your arm wrapped around him while he's going at it..then work up to picking him up..? Just a thought, I don't know if it'll work though. Good luck!
