2 Males or a Female and A Male? Empty
PostSubject: 2 Males or a Female and A Male?    2 Males or a Female and A Male? EmptyTue Mar 12, 2013 12:43 am

Hi all, Im new here so really sorry if I post this in the wrong part of the forum.

So I have a Male Husky that is 10 months old right now. I'm getting another Husky (already aware of the work and cost) both will be taken to obedience school. I'm also getting them from the same breeder so they will be related. My question is, is it better to get another Husky of the opposite sex or would it be better to get another male Husky? I'm looking for a companion for when I'm not home, so I need to know which one he will play with the best, also which one bonds better with the owner? I took mine out there to let him pick but he liked both the female and the male and both of them played back with him to, so now I'm not sure which one. which one.... Please help ? Lol

Thanks,
Brad

It depends on the dogs. I have two males but some dogs don't like being housed with the same-sex. If he gets along with both then I guess you get to pick which pup is your favorite Very Happy

In my experience, I agree with dahowlers, it just depends on the dog. I've heard to always get male/female if you're doing a pair, but we've always just gotten what we wanted and they all got along. I prefer male dogs personally, and so we've always usually just had one or two females at a time, the rest males. I find females get a bit... short with one another more often than the boys ever are. But nothing extreme. All were always fixed though, I imagine that has something to do with it.

Thanks for the reply's I appreciate the help. Based on your knowledge though it sounds like 2 males should be fine together. Mine is already fixed and the other will be getting fixed as well. I just wasn't sure because mine plays with this other female Husky that lives by us and the love each other, but I imagine if the other one and him grow up together they should get along just fine.

Thanks again for the help Smile

On the flip side, I have two girls and they get along very well.

I think it also has something to do with age difference. I'm not sure if that is a hard fact, but in my experience, there needs to be at least a year age difference or close to. When Kloe was alive, her and Kennedy were only 3 months apart...it was not good. Now with Sheba being close to two years younger, they get along sooo much better.

Not too sure if that is just coincidence or not!

Since he's neutered and pup will be neutered/spayed, it probably doesn't matter all that much. It will just depend on their personalities.

I've read that having a dog of the opposite sex makes for a better, happier pair but then Jaime (is that how she spells it?) from Gone To the Snow Dogs had three females and they seemed to have a ball together. If it was me, I'd probably get a female just to mix it up. But then i suppose picking a puppy with the personality traits your looking for in your next dog may be the best way to choose.

Not sure about the 2 males but I think it is definately the dogs personality and behavior that matters. We had a male got a female (8 years apart) all good got another female ( 5 years apart) good start then slipped into jealousy issues. We have the occasional bloody spat but it may be the aussie herding the other (aussie husky) and it is worse now with the male pup. The two girls get jealous and may be both via as pack leader. Both dog as so dang smart that they correct and disapline (sp) each other. Which is not always a good thing.

So I think have the dog pick the pup if you can.

If you are getting a puppy I don't see alot of issues with whether it is a female of Male. We got a rescue for a second dog decide a female would be better. Our pups are about 5 months or so difference in age (we are not real sure of Kerian age as she was a stray) Now if I were to get another dog which I would like it would probably be a male it seems that Kerian is a diva and a queen bee I am not sure she would get along with another female. It just depends on the dog's personality.

I have a female lab who is 19 months, Balon a male husky who is about 13 months and soon to be Loki male husky who will be 8 weeks lol. I decided on a male because 1) I have read that 2 males get along better then two females, and 2) We took Balon with us and honestly he liked everyone there. He was shy with the pups and goofy with his adult mom and sister. So we went with a male pup. I have also read that males are more affectionate then females, (I'm sure there are those with females who will tell us otherwise lol). If introduced properly it really shouldn't matter. Unless you really have a diva on your hands, in which case I'd go with the opposite sex. In some breeds it seems that males are more low key and affectionate.

I have two males and they definitely get along fine. Though one is 5 months and the other is three years. But when we were thinking about getting another Husky we definitely wanted to get another male and luckily we were able to rescue one. I'm not saying that this is across the board what happens, but in my experience every female husky I've had the chance to meet and get to know, they are much more high strung and not as affectionate as males I've known.

It really is what is up to you, and since your boy gets along with both, you'll be the one to make the decision.

I have one male and one female. When I had Cloud, I saw that he was definitely a ladies man LOL. He would always play with the other female dogs at the dog park and generally didn't play with males. No idea why. so I decided to get a female puppy. Cloud and Yuki are 4 months apart and are the BEST of friends.

However I do agree in my experience with sibes in general, two neutered males seem to get along best.

Yes they most certainly are! Can't wait for this one to be a little bigger so my big boy can start playing away with him. He's still not sure how to play with him yet cause he's so small. And good luck, be careful before you know it, you'll end up with a whole sled team lol Smile

Oh they all have their moments that's for sure! LOL So far the only time I have any issue between the boys tends to be when the girls are going into season. Then all bets are off, but outside of that things are usually pretty chill around here. The easiest ones are of course the spayed/neutered ones they pretty much get along with everyone no matter what time of season it is.

I have two males, they get along just fine. The downside is they are both dominant, so they play pretty rough sometimes to get something but won't hurt each other. I think it depends on the personality of the dogs and the age gap. Mine are one year apart each other.

I have two males too and they get along fine. They are two years apart in age, so I think that helps. They are both dominant as well, so playtime can get interesting..... As they get older they are mellowing out even more and I don't think they would be very happy without the other.
