PostSubject: Help! Selena isn't liking the new pup   Help! Selena isn't liking the new pup EmptySun Apr 14, 2013 4:55 pm

Ahhhhh, I'm going nutty over here affraid!

All was good in the beginning when we first got Kojak yesterday..Selena showed her teeth a couple times to him but that was it and then they played non-stop! Well, now Selena has become aggressive, even with other dogs and all her bones. I just don't know what to do. She has NEVER been like this...her lab friend she always shared her toys and bones with and now she snaps at her too.

Any advice???? I'm scared she's going to hurt the new little pup!

for now i would suggest removing all resources, bones toys food. Everything that was Selena's and everything you may have gotten for Kojak. You need to re-establish to Selena that everything in the house is YOURS and she only gets things if you let her and Kojak only gets things if you let him. It sounds like she is recourse hogging because of the new puppy which is kind of normal, it even happens with children when a new baby comes Smile The first day was more of a honeymoon, she had a new friend to play with, today she is realizing this new friend isn't leaving?! She is trying to figure out where she fits and where the new puppy fits.

I would slowly start with one toy at a time, if she can manage parallel play with Kohak ( she plays with one toy he plays with another) then you can praise her ridiculously. I would start with them separated as far as you can get but still within eyesight. I'd also start randomly taking a toy from her give it to him then in reverse. If they have a toy and squabble over it, say no take it away and put it out of reach so she can see you putting it out of reach. It won't take long for her to get the point if she fights over it no one gets it.

another thing that helps is buy a new tug of war rope, you want a new one so no one has a prior claim to it, and when they play tug of war nicely then they get praise if they don't whoever is being the meanie doesn't get to play tug of war with you for a minute. THen go back to the 3 of you playing. rinse and repeat.

These methods worked great when i was growing up in a multi animal household. It seems we were always trying to integrate a new dog to the pack lol

Yup pick up all the toys and just work on them with it. Like explained above. My girls Kay and Maya cannot have toys or anything together because Maya resource guards with Kay and we're still working on it. She's loads better though but that's probably because she kinda likes Kay now. Kay still doesn't really like Maya all that much.

Thank you very much for your help guys. I did try doing as you said but with no luck. Selena was being WAY too rough with the new puppy and nailing him every chance she had, I ended up having to keep them separated it was so bad. Then the puppy had diarrhea/roundworms...then my Selena started acting extremely weird, she stayed curled in a ball for 2 days and totally wasn't herself.

To make a long story short, we had to rehome the new puppy....Selena is so sick (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) that we spent the day at the vet yesterday and she had to have an IV and meds and they don't know what is wrong with her... Sad

My vet said sometimes with female huskies that are already set in their ways they won't allow other dogs into their home and prefer to be an only dog so I guess that was why? confused

Anyways, Selena is slowly getting back to herself..keeping down just rice and chicken and things are finally going back to normal after the past few CRAZY days!!

It could have also had something to do with the stress of a new puppy? According to your ticker, Selena is only 5 months, so it's was probably hard on her. Imagine being born, leaving your mom 8 weeks later, getting acquainted with a new surrounding & people, finally getting accustomed to the routines, and then throwing a whole new puppy with it's own changes into the mix...

I don't think getting another husky is out of the question - there are multiple people on here with more than one (female) husky. It's doable, but I think it would just take a little more time.

Best of luck and I really hope you found a good home for the pup.

I think I would question that, certainly should not be the case in a 5 month old puppy. Maybe, in a highly established female with an alpha personality. I'd be far more concerned that the puppy had something that was passed on to your older puppy.

I agree, I'm wondering if the puppy was sick and Selena sensed that. I'm not sure about dogs, but I know that cats will attack each other if one is sick. May not be anything, could have just been the stress though. I'm sure she'll get back to her crazy self soon enough. In any event, once she recovers, you might want to start socializing her with different puppies and dogs coming to your house if possible. Sounds like she was used to certain dogs, but diversifying might be helpful. Smile I hope she feels better soon! My female husky didn't like other adult females too well, but she was fine with puppies of either sex. When she was 5 months she didn't really have a problem with anybody, except she assumed 2 seconds after meeting another dog it wanted to play... That was annoying, but she mellowed out eventually.

I have a 2 acre fenced in yard so all my neighbors dogs come over to play its not that. She is finally 100% back to normal as of this morning, yay! They think she ate something she shouldn't have. As far as the puppy he is in a wonderful home with one of my friends and we play on introducing them again when they are a little older. Selena is extremely dominant, she always has been. So for now, she's going to be my only baby girl and that works for me and for her Smile

And off we go to play with doggy friends now that she feels better Cool
