My name is Kaitlin, nice to meet you all Wink
I actually don't own a husky just yet. i recently moved to the birmingham area, and we are getting a house soon. I have always wanted a husky growing up.. but never had one, even though we have always had dogs. My boyfriend and I decided that after we move in and get settled we would start looking for a husky puppy and its coming fast! I've done tons of research on training, temperament ect. and I found this forum and decided to get hooked in here so we can be the best husky owners we can be with a little help from the community. I would totally love to share the journey with ya'll and gladly accept advice.. maybe somebody down our way could point us in the direction husky breeders?

Welcome!
Unfortunately, I dont know of any breeders in Alabama. It will take a while to find a good breeder so be patient in your research. I lost $200 after putting a deposit on a litter because I realized a month later that the breeder was not reputable. She did not health test or show her dogs and bred her bitches way too often. Make sure the breeder does OFA and CERF testing (and can prove it) on both parents. Expect to pay $800 - $1000 for a quality pup.

Good luck on your search!

Thanks! thats the one thing I have kind of been confused about is the testing, isn't one of the tests a hip score? .. I've seen stuff about it but i Dont understand that either.

CERF is for eyes, its a score for inheritable eye diseases such a juvenile cataracts. OFA is a score for inheritable hip displasia. The purpose of these tests are to prevent the breeding of a parent that is a carrier of diseases that are common in the breed. So if you get a puppy from 2 parents that are clear then you are stacking your odds for having a healthy puppy--which means minimal vet bills and heart ache.

Be really careful, most of the breeders that I've come across in Alabama are awful. We lived in Pensacola for a while, and had a Husky meet up group. There is one in particular out of the Mobile area that showed up with some of the most poorly bred dogs I've ever seen, was proudly bragging about his breeding practices (which were horribly unethical), and then mistreating his dogs. A bunch of us actually left the meet up because of this guy. The name of his "kennel" escapes me right now, but when I have a few minutes later this morning I will look it up, as well as see if I can't come up with some decent ones.

It was Palmer's Huskies. Avoid him at all costs. Also avoid Fortenberry, they're unethical as well and we had some problems with them in the Facebook group.

Thank you so much. Don't you wish you didn't have to warn people against that type of thing. My family spends a lot of time in southern Alabama. We are always right near Pensacola. But back to the main subject... my boyfriend and I wouldn't have a problem taking a little road trip to surrounding states f we had to. Maybe that would be the better thing to do.
