Laying like a frog and bent tail Empty
PostSubject: Laying like a frog and bent tail   Laying like a frog and bent tail EmptyThu Oct 17, 2013 4:01 pm

Hi,

I have a 3 month old male husky pup and have just noticed that he is laying flat on his stomach with his front legs straight in front of him and his back legs straigh out behind him. Is this a normal thing for huskies to do?

His tail is also snapped right back against his back and curls to the sides most of the times aswell.  The breeder we got him from said he was vet checked and that there was no hip problems in his family but the frog laying and the snapped tail are getting me a little worried about him.  Also when he is in the sitting position his back legs kind of splay out a little.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A snapped tail isn't an indication of hip problems, but it is a 'fault' in reference to the breed standard. I know you said the breeder said he was vet checked, but were their hips actually certified by the OFA? You can verify that on offa.org. I've seen a lot of dogs sit in weird positions, and lay with their legs out behind them, so its not necessarily an indication of a problem, especially at such a young age. Hip dysplasia can show up as young as 5 months, but I would think 3 months would be too soon to tell. If you get really worried, you can always have x-rays done to check the hips. My pup hurt his leg, and I'm a nervous nelly, so I had x-rays done, in my case, his hips looked great. Does your pup have an odd gait, or look like he's in pain in any way?

I don't think he would have anything wrong with him, my pup likes to lean against things and sit with her legs to the side like a kid but she doesn't have any problems with her hips. Vets say she's 100% Laying like a frog and bent tail 20130717_110122_zps191c3365

She just likes to be weird.

She's 11 months and has yet to kick the habit.

If your worried about it, do what wpskier222 did and get him xrayed. Otherwise, it might just be a quirk.

Sierra is a frog layer, Vet told us to not let her do it much as it can cause issues later on, she is 10.5 yrs old, so not really gonna try to stop her from doing it now, i find it cute.
can you get a pic of the tail for us?

Kind of for the legs but they are more straight out in front and behind of him, so his is in a perfectly straight line. As for the tail, the whole tail from the base is flat on his back. I'll go try and take some pictures of his tail, the froggy position might take a little bit longer though.

So I've been following him around the house for the last half hour, but he's more in the mood for sitting and having tummy rubs at the moment so I haven't been able to get the best pictures of his tail, I'll try again later though and I've had no chance of the froggy pose, I did take one of him sitting so you can see what I mean about the leg splaying thing.

Then the tail, sorry they aren't the best. He normally carries it flat on his back leaning to either side

Wpskier222 sorry I missed your questions, he just kind of strut with his back legs like he is walking from the hips, my husband just described it as 'looking like a lion walk rather than a dog walk' and he doesn't appear to be in any pain. I also spoke to my vet this afternoon about it and he said to take him to see him Monday and he can do x-rays on him but will anything show up on those with him only being 3 months?

you may be jumping on the xrays, the tail is from undesirable trait breeding (nothing bad will come from it) the spread out legs sitting is from the hardwood floor and the feet slipping, unless he does it on carpet or out side to. the frog leg laying is not from bad hips but over time could cause issues to the hips. and the walking thing can be from him still growing and getting used to his size. most breeders xray hips at 2yrs, that when they can start breeding them and that is when hip issues will show up, i dont think much will show up at 3 months unless he is really favoring a leg or walking in pain. he is very cute Smile

Laying like a frog and bent tail Empty
PostSubject: Re: Laying like a frog and bent tail   Laying like a frog and bent tail EmptySun Oct 20, 2013 11:07 am

My husky is going to be 4 in November. When he was ten months he started limping after we went hiking for a day or so. I work at a vets office and brought him in to be checked out. I was talking to one of my vets and he said its possible that he's showing early signs of hip dysplasia... As we were talking, Rig layed frog legged in front of his.. Doc asked if he does this often and I said yup, like everyday. He said it was very unlikely that he has hip dysplasia because it's uncomfortable for them to lay like that when they have hip dysplasia. So... he recommended keeping his weight on the lower end of normal (yea right) and fish oil. I began giving him fish oil every morning and he hasnt limped after hiking since.... and yes, he still lays frog legged. Very Happy

I've known a corgi that likes to sleep splayed out like that when it's hot. It's a way for him to make his belly come into contact with the cool fireplace hearth. Maybe it feels good?
