Hi all,

I had a question about the growth progression of huskies. I've done plenty of research on this matter and can't seem to find a straight answer.

When I got my Husky he was 10lbs and four months, today he is 10 months and weighs 21lbs.

The vet said he was a small dog but his paws were big.

Is it possible that he'll have a growth spurt coming up or is he just a small dog? Did any of your pups grow slower? :)I'm a first time husky owner so I'm not too experienced on how they grow.

Holy cow! 21 lbs is tiny for a male husky! Have you had him tested for growth issues? Are you sure he's full husky? My pup was 13 lbs at 9 weeks, and at a week shy of 10 months, he's close to 50 lbs (although I haven't weighed him since 12/1, but he was 47 lbs at that point). 21 lbs at 10 months is very small and makes me suspect there is something else going on that is slowing his growth, either health-wise or genetically. Is he otherwise healthy?

I believe him to be full blooded husky. I got him from a local shelter tho with no information on his parents. He was CKC registered but as full blooded. I haven't had him tested for anything specifically but from all his vet visits they say he is in perfect health, and they check his bones and things often for dysplasia and things. I thought about taking him to a different vet because mine sees no concern, he said they all grow differently, which I know but I've never seen them this small before. I've even seen runts of litters bigger than him. I had a malamute who was the runt of the litter and was 8lbs for the first four months but then she ended up growing to 97lbs, that's why I kept thinking Bandit would grow but he's not. My vet keeps saying because his paws are so big that he'll grow but I just haven't seen any growth from him. He's been this size for a few months.

I'd be concerned about that size in a male - I would have checked for growth disorders because of his size.

He's a cutie though.

CKC doesn't mean much - if you mean Continental and not Canadian.

I think you really need to consult with a different vet. Where are you located? I can ask around for some knowledgeable vets (i know far too many husky breeders at this point).

I agree that that sounds pretty small for a male husky, and it certainly might be worth getting a second opinion. Given that the vet is saying he's healthy however, I'd be more inclined to lean towards him being some type of crossbreed.

I would say that my male was just shy of 30ish lbs at 10 months, but a year later he's about 55 pounds. Keep in mind that huskies aren't malamutes - they are quite a bit smaller. Male husky's can be at standard weight from 45 to 65lbs.

There are a lot of badly bred huskies out there that are larger than they should be. As Wy Renegade said, max for a male should be 60 lbs.

Badly bred as in bred by people who have no regard for or interest in the integrity of the breed standard for showing and working purposes, just for clarity.
