Housetraining with a bell? Empty
PostSubject: Housetraining with a bell?   Housetraining with a bell? EmptyFri Dec 03, 2010 12:45 am

Has anyone tried housetraining using a bell at the door? I have had several people suggest that I try that with my puppy. When I housetrained my first dog, I was in a much smaller home and could see the front door from the kitchen and living room so I always saw Dakota waiting at the door when he was ready. With Willow, I am in a bigger house now and the door that I take the dogs out to potty is only visible in the breezeway so I never know when she needs to go. I pretty much set a timer right now and take her out every hour. When I was telling a few people that this has been a bit challenging, I had 3 different people tell me about the bell trick. Apparently it worked quickly in their cases. Just curious if anyone here has tried it.

I haven't personally but know several people who have been successful with it Smile I say go for it! It's not a difficult concept for them to grasp. Just make them knock it with their paw every time you take them outside. They'll pick it up eventually. Smile

I think I will! If it doesn't work, I'm only out the cost of a bell, right? I had just never heard of it before and didn't know if it only worked with certain breeds. Willow is doing great, we hardly have accidents anymore but I just can't tell when she needs to go and I would love to get rid of the timer!

My dog trainer recommened it too. I wish I had gotten a bell earlier, but I only got one recently. Siku still has no clue what it means. Guess it takes a while for a dog thats used to not having to ring a bell. lol. She usually just whines to be let out and starts bouncing around all crazy like.

We did it with our two puppies and it working great so far. They picked it up very quickly and there were fewer accidents using this method. It is great because I can hear the bell from the other room so they don't have accidents if I don't see them sitting at the door.

My sister had told me about the bell last year when she was training her two puppies and it worked for her as well.

Good luck, I am sure you will have success!

My best friends dog trainer introduced her to it and it works awesome with her 8month lab/retriever mix.
