Coco bit another husky. What should I do? Empty
PostSubject: Coco bit another husky. What should I do?   Coco bit another husky. What should I do? EmptyMon Nov 03, 2014 10:05 am

Coco was doing her potty during our walk. Her husky friend, Richie (who is off leashed) noticed her and ran towards her wanting to play. However, Coco was offended, so she fought and bit her friend. It happened so fast. I couldn't stop it in time. It nearly broke into a bigger fight.

Luckily, I managed to separate them while Richie's owners were still running towards us. As Coco is a timid dog, she was terrified that someone was running/ charging towards us. So I just walked away after checking that Richie is okay. I did nothing to Coco. Coco just want to escape from that situation.

Should I scold her for bitting Richie?
Should I have made her sit and wait till she calms down?
- Think its impossible for above, she's usually very timid outdoor.
What should I have done if similar situation arises?

Did you let her around Richie afterwards? If so, how did she do? Some dogs need space and frankly I wouldn't want someone barging in on me while I was trying to take care of business. Has this ever happened before where another dog comes up to her trying to potty or was this the first time? Calming the situation is how I would approach it. Pull them apart, her aside, and give her some time to calm herself and perhaps finish the jobs she was so rudely interrupted from if she can, then work on slowly reintroducing the dogs. If this is a dog she sees often and usually likes you don't want this to scar their relationship. In future while she is doing her business I would work to not let other dogs around her until she's had a chance to finish.

Nope. Coco was terrified by Richie's charging owners, she pulled me away. I gave in to her fear. So they didn't make peace afterwards. Hopefully their friendship is not affected.

I was careless and did not noticed Richie. I will just have to be more alert everytime and look out for unleashed dogs.

I will remind myself to stay calm and try calm her too. But usually I gave in to her fears...

Keeping yourself calm is as important as keeping her calm. I would work toward rebuilding her relationship with other dogs but as well with owners. Make it positive. Build up her confidence with treats and praise and work on desensitization to things that alarm her.

Yup. I will work on rebuilding the friendship.

I adopted Coco 3 years ago. She came to me as a timid, food and toy aggressive dog. I have worked and solved her food and toy aggression. However, not much progress with her timidness.

She will panic and try to pull me away at the sight of bicycles, skate board, big group of passer by and etc. but she is okay if she knows the cyclist. So this part confuses me. I tried treats and juicy food, she will not take it once she is outside. So far, by standing aside and waiting for fearful stuff to pass us, seems to help with the situation. I have no idea what else I can do.

Glad to hear that they still get along and no hard feelings. That is awesome.

I would work her up to being treated outside of the house. Perhaps start in your backyard or outside the door of your apartment if you are an apartment dweller. Get something super high value like dehydrated chicken or anything she never gets any other time than when she is outside of the house. As she becomes comfortable enough with working for and taking treats outside the door then move farther away. Getting her calmed down and then occupying her brain with training will help with the desensitization and then you can slowly start pushing her comfort zone outward. When you are too far out of her comfort zone on walks and such just make sure you are still praising and petting her while frightening things are passing and after they go, then I would at least offer her the treat whether she takes it or not. It's at least a consistent gesture and someday she will probably take it.

If you have already conquered food and toy aggression then you can totally conquer her nerves, it will just potentially take longer. You just have to prove to her that nothing bad is going to happen to her the same as you did when teaching her that she doesn't need to get upset when a toy is taken. I have also heard good things from some of my co-workers that also have nervous dogs that swear by a product called a Thundershirt that they put on their animals when they take them out and they have had good results being able to keep their dog's attention while they are wearing it. You can pick them up online but I would try traditional desensitization first and see if she shows progress before looking at calming jackets.

Thanks for the advices. I shall try food/ treats that I have not given her at home. I shall start all over on her rehabilitation outside the apartment door then progress on. I will never give up on her.

I dismissed using thundershirt as I live in Singapore, hot tropical country. So I worry Coco may get too hot with Thundershirt.
