PostSubject: Eating and Pooing....   Tue Jan 13, 2015 11:33 am

Hey all,
It has been a while since I had an inside puppy (dog). The others were farm(barn) dogs. Anyhow, Mya is a bindle of joy, but can get frustrating at times. She is going on 10 weeks and I am feeding her TOTW puppy high prairie. She seems to love it! My questions,

How much to feed and how many times. I been putting in about 1 cup 3 times a day. She does leave some left over.

Also, my girl is not going potty on a regular basis. It seems that I have to wake up in the middle of the night after a 5pm feeding to go poo. Is this normal? Also, I will add it seems she has a bit of gas right be for she has to go!

Personally I think that 3 cups a day is way too much for such a little girl. My boys are full grown and only get 2 cups a day. That could be why she is pooping so much.

When Kesler was a baby, he was getting about 1 to 1 1/2 cups per day, split in to two feedings. It seemed to work for us. I ended up adjusting a bit when he was going through growth spurts. I used the amount of pooping to gauge how much to feed him Razz Good solid poops to me mean't we weren't over feeding him.

Also, if she is leaving food, I would take it away. I tend to like my dogs to eat everything so they don't start to get used to "grazing", and I adjust the amount I give them if they leave some. But that is just me Smile Someone else may have another opinion

Good luck!

Kiersten, I think you did a great job, Very Happy Rule of thumb, most huskies do not eat as much as the bag recommends, up to 25% less than the bag requirements. Under a year old I would feed 3 cups at max, the gas may be a result in a slightly higher protein level than the standard kibble. I know that TOTW has puppy and regular formula, and I believe the regular formula says all life stage, if it does, I would switch over to the all life stages and see if there's a difference with the gas. Puppies are funny in the potty department, they will grow out of the 5 am poo wake up, however, you did not actually state the regular basis, is it too frequent or not enough pooing you are concerned with? I also agree when she is done eating pick up the food and adjust the amount for the next time.

It seems that she poos ALL the time! Say i feed her at 5pm, she will have gone before the 5pm feeding, before bed, and then again in the middle of the night or early next morning.

If her poop is solid and well formed, then she is eating a good amount and her body will settle down as she grows. If her poop is more of a pudding consistency then you are feeding too much, if this is the case cut down about an 1/8 of a cup per feeding, and keep adjusting until she has solid poops. Because she is a pup her intestines are shorter than an adult, I imagine food goes through their bodies faster, hence going more often. My biggest concern as a husky owner is not necessarily how many times they poop, but the consistency of the poop. As an adult on a high exercise day my girl eats 2 cups of kibble and may poop twice in the day, on a low activity day she will eat 1 cup of kibble and will go once. As a puppy it was more like 2.5 to 3 cups a day and she went several times a day. Hope thta helps more..... Very Happy

Thank you.
Another example is, last night. I feed her about 1/2 cup at 5pm. She woke me up at 5am and wend almost 3 times! Not to be gross, but most of the time it looks like soft serve coming out, but it harder than that. I did feed her a little more than 1/2 cup this morning at 6:30am and it was about 3-4 nice hard defined pieces.
