PostSubject: Husky puppy color changes?   Fri Nov 24, 2017 2:25 pm

First time husky owner here. I have an almost 4 month old Husky puppy name Rhea. Her colors have changed since we got her. Originally i thought she was going to be a light red, but she's now getting black hairs on her back and tail. Also her mask markings are starting to darken as well. I did a little research and I believe she may be a sable husky. I had never heard of these before but they are very beautiful (just like all huskies Razz)

Anyway, I was wanting to see what you guys think? Have you heard of sable colored huskies? If so, do you think she may be or is she just an odd red? I've posted some pics since we got her a month ago until now.

Edit: also, if you watch gone to the snow dogs on YouTube, they have a sable husky (shelby) and she looked a lot like Rhea does color wise when she was a puppy which is really what made me think she may be sable.

She does look like Shelby. I don't know much about sable coloring, but she is really lovely!

Hard to tell. Does she have a red nose or a black nose?

Well it was black as you can tell from the first couple pictures but it’s starting to turn kinda pink at the tip where the nostrils are so not exactly sure.

Wow - to me the nose and eyeliner look liver colored in the picture. Black is REALLY black, like kohl. Also her lip liner looks liver colored, too. Which would preclude a sable - sable has black points (nose, lips, eye "liner"

ah thanks i see what you mean now about the nose after comparing to other pictures online. so do you think she is sable or maybe just light red with some darker spots? It doesn't really matter her color, i'm just curious to see what others opinions are :p

If her nose is liver committed then she will be some variant of red. If her nose is black and her undercoat is cream and her guard hairs are banded with reddish near the skin and black tipped, then she would be a sable..If she had a black nose and her guard hairs are not banded Ann's she had areas of buff, Brown, red then she could be a wolf gray.

What color are her parents? From these pictures I would cures probably a dilute red as her nose looks liver committed to.me. pretty girl, not matter what.

I zoomed in with my iPad and the first two pics, her nose and eyeliner looks very black, however, the pics after that, it's a noticeable dark liver color. I hope you stick around and post updates cuz I'm super curious! Beautiful pup no matter what though, of course.

ETA. I just noticed her nose and eyeliner looks very much like jbealer's Sierra (our Husky of the Month in the upper left hand corner of the main page) she is a red.

I believe her dad was a very dark almost copper red and her mom was a light red/dilute red so she probably is a red. I thought her dad was black which is what was making me question it but i went and looked at the pictures again and i'm pretty sure the dad was red as well. He was a beauty. Thank you for your help Smile
