I'm Lauryn! We don't have a husky yet but have been on the lookout for about 6 months. Kind of frustrating, We were trying to adopt but we figured it was time to look for some good breeders. We have had some old husky boys and loved them so much and we have feel in love with sibes. We are in Alaska. You'd figure that we are in Alaska we wouldn't have a problem finding a Siberian husky puppy but no avail. I hope to get to know ya'll!

Hi Lauryn and welcome!
I live in Edmonton, Alberta and had the same problem, we looked to adopt for about 6 months but the huskies go so fast here...so we ended up buying from one of 5 breeders in the province...couldn't believe there were only 5. And most of them had waitlists for their puppies!

You'll find the right pup when the time is right!

I know the husky rescues "close" to us will not adopt to a family farther than 1 hour away. They want to do a home-study and I respect that. There were some cute pups 3-4 hours away, but, sadly they were unavailable for us. Good luck finding the perfect little furbaby!! Can't wait to hear more stories of your search.

Welcome!

That drives me up a wall. Same thing happened to us and about 50% of the huskies we were looking at a year ago still don't have homes... sucks for the dogs and I think rescues that have such strict restrictions are ridiculous.

Welcome Lauryn! Check out this thread: How to Find a Reputable Breeder

However keep a lookout! You've checked petfinder and everything? I'd see if the breeders that you find on your search know of any rescues as well.

Hi Lauryn and welcome! Glad to see you taking your time and finding the right dog for you. It's refreshing to see in a society of instant gratification where people will take the first dog that comes along regardless of how badly or well bred it might be. Kudos to you for being patient. It is frustrating looking for a long time to no avail but when you do find the "one" that is meant to be it will be worth the wait.

When we were ready to add a husky to our family we looked on Petfinder, shelters, rescues, and talked to a number of reputable breeders. One thing or another just wasn't right or just didn't work out and it was frustrating. I think it was a good 6 months or more before we finally found our perfect boy at a shelter. Well worth the wait and frustration in the end. It's weird how when the right one comes along, you somehow just know.

It is a shame to hear of the hard time some members are having finding huskies to adopt. I live in Oklahoma and here and in Texas there are more huskies in shelters and rescues than have homes. I applaud the fact that rescues have restrictions on huskies especially, they are so attractive as puppies and not everyone does there research. As we all know they are not a breed for everyone. Most of the rescues that I've transported for or done home visits for are willing to work with folks and use restrictions as guidelines not set in stone requirements. There are husky rescues that will arrange transport for dogs out of state, some across several states. Search for one in your region, don't give up, there are too many dogs dying in shelters, good luck in your search.

Welcome! Hope you find your husky soon, I echo everyone here in when the one ment for you will come and you will know it. When we adopted both of ours I knew just from looking at them it was ment to be. Sierra as adopted to 5 homes before us! She was ment to find us I believe. And Jack, well he was the only red at the rescue and came runing right up to us when we walked in, ans sierra just bonded with him even though he was younger! Yours will come when the time is right. Keep looking!

These are the rescues that I recommend. I, unfortunately, have had too many bad experiences where I said, "I have a teenage husky and want another one. We are experienced, love the breed, and come see how healthy and happy Koda is. I assure you, I will give a dog a fantastic home." and their response was "You don't have a fenced in yard, I'm sorry no." I was like, "DID YOU HEAR ME?! I have experience and have a HEALTHY AND HAPPY TEENAGE MALE...you really think a yard is an issue for us!?" OR I got "We don't adopt outside of 100 mile radius, I'm sorry."

It's just discouraging and frustrating. I love rescue, but I think that restrictions should be GUIDELINES not set in stone.

Sorry for the thread hijack. Smile

Went thru the same B/S when we tried to adopt Sterling, last year after Mylo's passing. They never even gave me a rejection reason they just sent me an email telling me no, but I knew it was because of the no fenced yard excuse. Here I've been with Huskies since 1985, obedience trained each one, and get walked at least 30 miles a week and they tell me I'm not qualified. But alls well that ends well............ cuz instead we got Biko.

I tried two rescue before I ended up going to a breeder to get Willow. The first rescue was out of Indiana and they were great to work with but they just didn't have a female that was good with cats. When I went to the 2nd rescue, they didn't even bother to give me a call back. Instead they told a county shelter to call me cause the shelter had two male husky mixes. I wasn't even looking for a male, I wanted a female.

Very true Smile

You and I were likely dealing with a lot of the same rescues. I called a few out in your area as well as many out here. We just got lucky last year and found Hailey at a shelter (sort of), so it all ends well for sure Smile

Hi guys! We were shot down multiple times because of a younger child. There was two that were in the shelter for a year! They didn't want them going to a home that had small children. I can understand when they first join the pack and trying to figure out the limit but i've had many foster huskies in the past that would jump and have been corrected with me and a trainer and had no problem. They told mee it was a liability issue. We actually found one at a shelter that I had no idea about. It was a kill shelter and surprisingly it was almost her time up. I've heard word of it when I was reading my huskies 4 life (yahoo group) email. I called and they told me I could come look at her and get a feel for her. She is amazing! She is 7 months. She has only been in our pack for 2 days but she is very outspoken. I would like to give her a friend but it will have to be next payday Very Happy . She did have collar issues but she does okay with the harness. We are still working with her but for the past 2 days she has done great. I'll post pictures when I take them tomorrow!

Thanks for saving her life! There are so many wonderful huskies in the same situation and not enough people willing to give a shelter animal a home. It may not be as easy as paying a breeder but the reward is much greater knowing you are saving a life. Look forward to seeing the pics.

I see you found a pup, congratulations and thank you so much for rescuing! You also mentioned potentially adding a friend for her and just wanted to point you in the direction of Northern Lights Sled Dog Rescue based in Indianapolis, IN. They do adopt nationwide. I'm not quite sure how they do it, probably have you send a ton of pictures of your home and family as well as references, but it could be worth a shot when you get to the wanting to add a friend.
