| So weirdly enough, i took spider to a vet behaviorist consult and the recommendation was that i put alot of work into spider as a true service dog among other things. Its been very off and on depending on her mood but if she has to stay still she howly talks very loudly. Its actually her biggest problem. Walks nicely most of the time, listens mostly but all while screaming so today in salida we went on a short walk (because im only 6 days off crutches) and if splinter stops to pee, and he does ever bush and rock and cactus, she howls. So i gave her a peice of boars hear roast beef. She was howling while she ate it. But really its the only thing keeping her from being jerrys service dog. So any ideas on training that out without training her to be all together silent. I cant have the growl trained out of her. Thats how dogs around kids end up biting the kids with no real warning. |

| I wish I had a decent answer to how to keep a dog quiet ... when it's appropriate. And I do understand the "Don't train a dog to NOT growl, you're setting it up to be put down!" If they have no way to warn someone off then they have no recourse but to bite (or run and I don't know many dogs that run from a perceived threat.)
The only thing that comes to mind is some serious one-on-one with you setting the places where noise is okay and where it's not. It'll undoubtedly take longer to train but worth it to have a dog who'll make appropriate noise at the appropriate times and places. Does she alert on Jerry having a problem ... diabetic? ?? Which leaves you with the problem of "Is it Jerry or is she just talking to a coyote?"
In any case "Rots a ruck!" _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Her alert on jerry is to push him the direction of a chair or if none available a wall then she pins him. Its the only time she will put her paws on his shoulders and thats the true signal. Jerry has psychogenic seizures related to military issues. So she has less then 3 seconds normally between the signal and the seizure. Luckily they are focal tonic seizures most of the time so to the public it would look more like fainting and her job is not only to warn but the next step is to keep him from falling out of a chair or over and hitting his head if she guides him down a wall. She is 100% in the house and 90% in public but it sounds like i have a protesting coyote in public.
Courtesy of the Alamosa rural va clinic letting me just stop in with her she is ok there but it took a bunch of times |

| And thats where im kinda stumped. The only thing i do know is if i tell her to be quiet, she knows exactly what im saying and gets louder.
I have thought about trying to encourage it when she is out of harness and put a stop to it when she is in harness? It works on horses will that even work on a dog? Maybe trazadone? Cbd? |

| I personally have used a bark or ecollar with this. If you want her to not do it in harness then add the collar when in harness to help correct to that particular piece of equipment. She should learn the vibration, or zap, only comes when in harness. Just make sure she gets time not in harness where she can freely yap to assist in creating the association. Often when dogs do this largely on leash it's their own warning mechanism for vulnerable moments. When peeing or eating she's in the middle of what can be perceived as a vulnerable moment that the leash (or sometimes a command) prevents her from getting to a fully comfortable state before doing the vulnerable task. This is why some dogs are leash aggressive while being totally fine with something when off-leash. Using the harness as her cue to be quiet and work is generally easier than trying to train the quiet command. _________________ |
