Dog has sprained (?) ankle. Empty
PostSubject: Dog has sprained (?) ankle.   Dog has sprained (?) ankle. EmptyTue Nov 13, 2012 10:26 pm

My 6 month puppy, Royce, seemed to have hurt his front right leg about 2-3 hours ago. He was running by me outside (something he does literally every single day) and he cut it a little too close this time and bumped off my leg and ran into the side of the house at a pretty full force. The second he hit it, he screamed and yelped the loudest I had ever heard him. I scooped him up and immediately rushed him inside and set him on the couch. I tried bending his paw and feeling around it, and a few times, he yelped and tried to bite my hand. He fell asleep almost instantly a few minutes later, which is something he rarely does, especially when the other dog is trying to play with him. After I let him sleep for a few minutes, I felt his paw a little more and he was just staring at me. I bent it a few times and felt around to see if there was a pulled muscle or anything like that and I couldn't really feel anything, and when I offered him a treat to see him walk, he was limping and every few steps, he would wimper just a little bit. There were a few times where I could tell he would put some pressure on it and he wouldn't do anything, but he's constantly limping now. He's sleeping more than usual at this moment, so I don't know exactly what to do. I read on a few other sites to see how he feels 24 hours later and if it's still a problem, then I should take him to the vet. Is there anything I can do to make sure he'll be alright? I'm very concerned and it gets me in a bit of a panic whenever he walks and is limping with every step he takes. I don't think it's broken, but I'm pretty convinced he might've sprained it or pulled something, but I'm not sure.

Sounds like a sprain let Royce be lazy for a day or two and he'll be back into trouble just like before.

I'm just a little concerned, because I know many dogs like to hide the fact that they're in pain. It's been about 9 hours and he's still limping. He's not yelping anymore, but it still looks like it hurts him to walk. I'm not trying to sound like a bad owner and trying everything not to take him to the vet, but money is just really tight on our end and god only knows how much it would cost if they actually found something wrong. Obviously, if I need to take him to the vet, then I will, but I don't know if he'll be able to walk it off, or if he's in a lot of pain and just doesn't want to show it.

Thats one reason why unless it was a drastic event that he hurt himself let him be for a day or two to see how he recovers. Like people, sprains hurt like hell but the best thing you can do is just rest it maybe if he'll cooperate ice it for 10-15 minutes every few hours. If still gimping about by the weekend then I'd suggest taking him to the vet to confirm there is no serious damage.

My lab sprained her back leg a week ago, took about 3 days before she stopped limping, never took her to the vet, and she is fine. I would have taken her if she wasn't better by the weekend, but she did get better. I bet your boy just needs to rest it. Don't let him run around like crazy if you can....
