Just thought I'd drop in and say Hi and introduce my "owner" Nanook. He's 12 weeks now and we've had a blast with him so far. I'm not new to raising dogs, though my wife is. This is both our first Husky though. Done a ton of research already and he's done pretty well so far (got quite a few commands/training etc already down and man is he smart!). Aside from that though I thought I'd find out what you all would answer to this: If you were to start over and get a Husky for the first time what is the one piece of advice/tip etc that you wish you would have known ahead of time?

Welcome Very Happy Our pups are about the same age, so I can't really give any answer to that question. I'll be interested to see what others have to say though, good question!

The two huskies I had before Bodhi were not crate trained.
I got them as puppies, and I tried to crate train them.
But I gave up because it was so difficult.
I wish I had kept going.

I adopted Bodhi at a year and five months.
He was already crate trained.
What a difference!

I second crate trainning.
I personally thought at first it was mean to put a baby puppy in a crate, but it's very much needed; and worth it. Haha.

Welcome btw, Nanook is adorable - I wanna hug him lol XD.

Thanks everyone. Amy and I have already got him crate trained (did the same with my pugs while they were puppies at least). Wasn't too difficult, though the first week or so was pretty hard (in regards to lack of sleep). I haven't had a kid so I can't speak to it, but I imagine (and from the friends I have that do have kids that I've described the issues I've faced so far) it's quite similar to having a child. Ashleigh congrats on getting the new puppy! My advice to you would be indeed crate train, and if possible take some time off work (or school or whatever) the first week so they aren't alone too much that first week. We lucked out and got Nanook December 22 so I had some time off the following two weeks so he wasn't alone too much that first two weeks while he was adjusting and I think it helped. Now, unfortunately, we're away for on average 8-9 hours while we're both at work but we're looking into getting someone to come by a couple of days a week to let him out at noon when we'll be gone longer. Hope that helps Very Happy

Oh I already have a crate! (Two actually lol.)

I thankfully have an awesome boss who is going to let me take the pup to work with me, so he won't be alone pretty much at all for the first few weeks. Smile If I had vacation time I would take a few days at least, but I won't have that yet!

Wow that's a pretty sweet situation. Unfortunately I work in the software industry so I can't really bring Nanook to work with me... not sure how much work I'd even get done if I did lol! Razz

Welcome! We adopted at 6 and 1 so no puppy advice, I will say when are you getting a 2nd cause well just know at some point you will Wink that's my advice.
Can't wait to watch him grow.

And just to check at 12 weeks are you really leaving him crated for 8hrs or do ur work shifts overlap? Wuld really get someone there to let hiim out to pee mid day.

We both get up a 05:00hrs. I leave for work at 06:30 hrs and she leaves I believe at 07:00hrs (have to double check with her on that). I get off about 15:00 hrs and home around 15:30 so ya slightly over 8 hrs. As I mentioned before we're currently looking into having someone come by to let him out about noon. Just have to find someone I feel comfortable letting into our apartment and more importantly with Nanook.
